1 corinthians 11 11-26 Remember
Remember
Reflecting on Christ’s death for our sin
This morning to celebrate Easter we will remember and worship Christ
At the end of the service we will serve the Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is intended as a memorial and a time of reflection on what Christ has done for us – how He suffered and died for our sin – it provides this picture in anticipation of His coming again
Let me give some instructions so we can participate without interruption at that time
The Lord’s supper is intended only for those who have trusted Christ as their savior
It is intended for those who have examined themselves and are seeking to walk with
Him (not perfect – but seeking to be a Christ follower and deal with sin)
We welcome you to participate with us if you meet these criteria (don’t have to be
a member of our church)
We leave the decision up to you on whether to participate
If you choose to participate please hold the bread until all are served – will pray and eat / drink together
video the weight of our sin
Let us remember and celebrate that the weight of our sin has been removed through the death of Christ
I. Remember His great love for me
A. He gave Himself in the midst of betrayal
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
1. Judas betrayal
2. The disciples abandonment
3. Yet He died
(NKJV) Romans 5 6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
B. He willingly gave Himself
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it
(NKJV) Mark 14 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
(NKJV) Psalm 118 22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
II. Remember His suffering for my sin
A. He was crushed for me
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 24 … and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Crush the bread
B. He endured the wrath of God for my sin
(NKJV) Isaiah 53 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
(NKJV) Isaiah 53 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
(NKJV) Isaiah 53 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, .... 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
III. Remember the relationship He offers
A. A new relationship by His death
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Spill the juice on white T shirt
B. A transformation and intimacy with God
(NKJV) Jeremiah 31 31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers … My covenant which they broke, …
33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts;
(NKJV) Jeremiah 31 33 … and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
IV. Remember His coming again
A. He lives and comes again
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you
proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
An empty chair – Jews at Passover set an empty plate and chair waiting for Elijah to come and proclaim the arrival of Messiah
B. A transforming expectation
(NKJV) Revelation 22 12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
(NKJV) Revelation 22 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
! V. Remember and give Him your sin
A. So examine yourself
(NKJV) 1 Corinthians 11 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
