Timothy
-going to be looking at two passages of scripture
-the first with wide angle lense
-the second with microscope
-my goal is to use first section of scripture to help you understand what to expect from me
-preaching philosophy
-what I hope for our relationship to be
1 and 2 Timothy
Paul sent timothy to Ephesus because they had some bad preachers and teachers there
Rooted in Sound Doctrine
-spends first few verses telling Timothy details of the situation and what he’s going to be walking into
-names names of bad apples to look out for
-I’ve come into a good church with sound doctrine
-thankful
-but no matter what the circumstance is, mine is a very good one, Timothy’s wasn’t but no matter what the end result is in verse 5
That’s my ultimate Goal, is love
if I could sum up what I want to do, and why I want to be here, it’s love
i want to love you all, show christs love, live christs love
I want us to be a church built on love
-Paul spends the rest of chapter 1 specifying what he wants Timothy to teach
-he wants to help the Ephesians church be a light to the city,
-to save lost sinners
-Chapter 2
-details out the specifics of worship
-he wants them to be a praying church, for all people
-Likewise I want us to be a praying church
-not just for each other, but for the community we’re A part of
Chapter 3
-Paul details out the specifics of how the church is to be run
-brings me to my first Request
-I’m coming to you as a preacher, teaching minister, pulpit minister
-I’m not a pastor
-if that is confusing, or doesn’t make sense, I want to explain what I mean, so hold on to that thought as we read 1 Timothy chapter 3
“Overseer”
-in the Greek the word is episcopos
-Episcopal church
-Overseer, Pastor, Elder, Shepherd
-All used to describe a particular role within the church
-Elders: greek word is ‘presbuteros’
-Presbyterian church
-So all three of these terms, Elder, Shepherd, Overseer
-All used to mean the same people
-And the word you sometimes hear as “Pastor”
-In the Greek it’s the exact same word as the word Shepherd
-And an elder is someone who Over-sees the affairs of the church
-Handle finances
-Hiring
-Disputes
-Leaders of the church
-The word deacon means servant
-A deacon is the person who does the leg work
-That’s all the really important part of putting a church together that nobody sees
-It’s the thankless part of serving in the church
-Preparing Communion
-Running the Computer
-Vaccuming the floor
-Mowing the lawn,
-taking care of the flowers
-Official or not, that’s the role of a Deacon
-If you serve in the church you’re doing the role of a deacon
-1 Tim 4:6
-What does your bible say “Servant, Minister”
-Diakanos
-Deacon
It comes down to authority
I am under the authority of Ron and Stu, and I am a servant of the congregation
And that’s important
1 Man show
Preacher leads a church from the pulpit, and the congregation might Grow, but if the preacher leaves so does the congregation
That’s not how you grow a healthy church
A healthy church has this network
Elders/Shepherds and pastors, who manage the affairs of the church
Teachers/ Preachers, servants who help with making sure the bible is read, and the congregation is taught about the bible
The other reason that structure is important
I need someone to keep me in check
If I am not properly serving the congregation
If I’m preaching something that is unsound,
I need that authority, those elders, to be able to step in and say something
-Moving into 2nd timothy
-letter is written much later
-Paul is giving further instructions to timothy
-much of it is more encouragement
Paul Gives an instruction and a warning
Preach the word
Do what the bible says
-he’s doubling down on 1 Tim 4:13 “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.”
Warning: People are going to want to bring in teachers who just say what they want to hear, whether it’s popular or not
It’s a warning to the congregation,
But it’s also in a way a warning to Timothy
The temptation to preach what y’all want to hear is a very real one
The job of ron and Stew is to keep me in check
And to make sure I’m staying sound
And I want them to do that
Just like Authority is important
Accountability is important
Flip side, very important
You’re not always going to like what I preach
You’re not always going to agree with what I preach
I want you all to let me know when that happens
My only request is that you do it with bible in hand we can figure out what the bible says about it together
