WHICH ONE DO I FALL UNDER ?
“ Christian or Disciple “
Luke 14:25-35
25 “Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. 34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.””
Christians — Disciples : do you hunger and thirst after God ?
Note: Because a DEAD MAN - male or female, don’t hunger or thirst for God or the things of God.
Note: So if you are a CHRISTIAN or DISCIPLE and don’t hunger or thirst after God or the things of God are probably NOT SAVED.
Note: Today we throw this word around (Christian) and expected people to just think that we are WRAPED UP, TIRED UP & TANGLE UP in the Lord. Cristian tells of our Position—(In Christ) but it don’t tell about our Priorities—(Who’s First).
Note: In other words Christianity don’t always display My Christ & My Commitment but I’m saved.
Note: That’s why Jesus always used the word “ If you are My Disciple “
Note: Much of what Jesus taught would be considered “unpopular” today in many Churches.
Note: Can you imagine people coming to church EVERY SUNDAY to Worship & Praise the Lord but don’t want to hear from Him.
Note: we look at Pastors being HARD & BRUTAL from the Pulpit but Jesus was HARD & BRUTAL with the TRUTH for genuine Transformation.
Jesus said things like;
Luke 13:32 KJV
“And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.”
Matthew 12:34
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”
Matthew 23:33
“Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?”
Matthew 23:13
“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.”
Matthew 23:16
“Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!”
Matthew 23:17
“Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?”
Jesus gives us a clear blue print
A clear understanding or a clear picture
Of what His expectations are for
Those of us who claim to be His disciples
Luke 14: 25 (NIV)
25 “Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
Jesus have the crowds a dream of most preachers
But the crowds wanted Cash—Cribs—Cloths but didn’t want Christ
Note: They were not committed to Jesus Christ they were part of the outside crowd of people that may have been curious about Jesus Christ to seen how they can benefit but not be a benefit.
Book: How To Help Your Pastor Succeed — [ The Multitude - The Provisional Disciples - The Inner Circle ]
Note: This crowd had a Preaching Checklist
1. Don’t mention hell
2. Don’t challenge their sin
3. Don’t offend them
4. Don’t go to deep
5. Then that will get them to come back with more people.
Note: Jesus will let them know if you want to be a true disciple of mine, a real follower of mine this is what it’s going to take.
Qualification #1
[ A True disciple elevates their FAITH over their FAMILY ]
Luke 14:26A
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters “
“If anyone” (Any Born Again Believer)
Luke 14:26B
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
Note: In our culture people definitely put family over faith
Footnote: Some cultures will even have an actual funeral for you. You are dead to them.
Example: Our cultures today the grandparents running more with their grandchildren than the actual parents and missing events at their church.
Note: Jesus says you must be willing to be disown by your own family members and put your relationship with Jesus in a different category and elevate it about your family if you’re going to be a disciple of mine.
Qualification # 2
[ A True disciple models Sacrifice over Self-Centeredness ]
Luke 14:26
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. “yes, even their own life”
Note: Jesus must be first and far most
Note: God’s will first not Our will first
Lord don’t touch my: Career—Money—Family—Dating—Comfort—401K
Statement: Honest talk……we’re afraid to get closer to God in fear of what He may require of us.
Luke 14:33 (NIV)
33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
Qualification # 3
[ A True Disciple is willing to accept Pain rather than always expecting Pleasure. ]
Luke 14:27
Note: A 1st century Roman, Jews or Gentile they understood what carrying your cross means.
Footnote: “Preaching this may empty the church rather than grow it”
Note: They understood that Christianity could very well cost them Their lives (what the bible meant back then means the same thing TODAY).
Note: Jesus is not promising an easy life
Example: 3rd John 1:2 (KJV)
Prosperity preachers preach this
Qualification # 4
[ A True Disciple elevates Relationship over Religion ]
Luke 14:27
27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
In this culture when a Rabbi would invite someone to follow them he was essentially inviting them to be a learner of them. So the question you want to ask here to yourself, Am I Learning — Relationship?
Learning—Growing—Reading—Studying—Obeying—Trusting—Seeking
Religion—>Attending Church—Giving Money—Shouting in Church—Serving in Church
Note: A True Disciple just don’t stay in the crowd.
Qualification # 5
[ A True Disciple values Commitment over Convenience ]
Luke 14:28
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
Note: Jesus is saying you need to consider discipleship before you just jump in —
“It Costs”
Example: Before you get in count the COST — Ministry—Married—Build
Note: We have too many unfinished towers
Qualification # 6
[ A True Disciple is Useful to God rather than Useless ]
Luke 14:34-35
34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.
Note:
In this day salt was a very very value commodity.
It was used for a seasoning or flavor enhancement and it was also used as a preservative that was able to keep food from spoiling. In both situations salt was used to create change.
If salt was left around the wrong minerals, the salt could very well be contaminated and lose its taste, flavor, and its usefulness.
Note: Jesus is saying Christians are supposed to be Salt—>Change things.
Note: But most Christians are contaminated. — [ Making NO IMPACT on others ]
Note: Salt was also used as a Fertilizer. They would throw salt on top of manure to keep the weeds from coming up.
Luke 14:35
35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.
Note: Jesus is saying I can’t even use you for a secondary use (manure).
Quote: Are you a disciple or a Christian that’s just going along with the flow
Quote: “So many of us give so little to the One who gave so much”
Quote: “Salvation will cost you nothing, but discipleship will cost you everything”
