The Shrewd Steward fi fi Resolved: to leverage present, temporary, duciary assets for future, long-term, personal bene t (v. 4) fi duciary = “designating something held in trust for another” “Shrewd implies keenness of mind, sharp insight, and a cleverness in practical matters” (Webster’s New World College Dictionary 4th ed.) 1 Peter 1:18-19 (NKJ) 18 know that they were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or 19 gold . . . but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Luke 15:18-19 (NKJ) "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before 19 you, "and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ Luke 6:35–36 (ESV) But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for 36 he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Luke 14:12–14(ESV) He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also 13 invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” Revelation 7:15 (ESV) Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. Revelation 20:6 (ESV) fi Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the rst resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. “Resolved, to endeavor to obtain for myself as much happiness, in the other world, as I possibly can.” —Jonathan Edwards (“The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards”) Ecclesiastes 2:18–19 (ESV) I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after 19 me, and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. Matthew 5:29-30 (ESV) 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and ff throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into 30 hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it o and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. Matthew 6:19-21 ESV "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break 20 in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and 21 where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (ESV) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with 18 everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
