List of events that had great influence on America.

Declaration of Independence (1776)

Constitution of the United States of America (1787)

Louisiana Purchase (1803)

Monroe Doctrine (1823)

According to the policy, the United States would not intervene in European affairs, but likewise it would not tolerate further European colonization in the Americas.

Battle of Gettysburg (1863)

13th amendment abolished slavery (1865)

Stock Market Crash (1929)

The Attack upon the World Trade Centers (2001)

Remember knowing this was going ot have a great influence upon us as a nation.

Arguably none were of greater influence than the 2nd Great Awakening (1790-1840)

You cannot tell a true story of America without telling of the role that Christianity has played in its development.

The 2nd Great Awakening shaped much of the culture of America

Schools of higher education were established to train ministers
Social reform in America's history have come from awakenings (anti-slavery movement, child labor laws, women’s rights, many more
The Second Great Awakening of the mid-1800s brought a surge of new members into the nation’s churches.
The era of the Second Great Awakening demonstrates the incredible capacity of churches focused on the Great Commission to transform the religious character of a nation.
Good laws may hold the rotten bark some longer together, but in a little time all laws must give way to the tide of popular opinion, and be laid prostrate under universal practice. Hence it clearly follows, that the teachers and rulers of every religious denomination are bound mutually to each other, and to the whole society, to watch over the manner of their several members ["Thanksgiving Sermon," in Works, 5:265].

What was the most distinctive characteristics of the 2nd Great Awakening

The Second Great Awakening featured a belief that every man, woman, and child were personally responsible for the decisions that will make concerning Christ.

You can see how this has shaped the American mindset

We know regardless of what family or economic situation we are born into our decisions make a difference in our lives
We did not need to wait for others to make it to the moon, we made our own way.
We do not look to a state church to tell us what to believe about God
We are a nation of people who have freedom to live according to our conscience

This is a Bible truth

Romans 14:12 “12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

Are we a Christian nation has never really been the question?

The real question is always. Are you a Christian?

Each of us will give an account to God.

Romans 14:12 “12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

The day is appointed for each of us.

One day we will all stand before God. Hebrews 9:27 “27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”

Tomorrow morning we will look at a story that Jesus told about a meal.

The master invited many people to a meal but they made excuses
The master told those in in his house to go out and compel people to join them

When the citizens of a nation live with knowing they have a personal responsibility to the God of heaven our nation is blessed by the transforming power of the Gospel. We need an awakening of this truth once more.
