13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
Title - The Lord’s Anointed

Main Point

Anointing is God’s way of making His work known to men. It declares His purpose and His work. If God is at work today, then He must have anointed men and women with whom He is bringing to pass His purpose for His glory.
Key Questions
what is anointing?
what is the purpose of anointing
who are God’s anointed today

Background

Definition
Anoint means to smear, to rub with oil (although more often ‘poured’ on the head)
pahid (because of the act of applying the oil)
anointing, means -
the act of applying or pouring the anointing oil
the anointing oil that is poured on the person
anointing oil signifies the Holy Spirit
How David became God’s anointed one
God has provided for Himself a king among Jesse’s sons
1 Samuel 16:1–3 NKJV
1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
God looks at the heart
1 Samuel 16:6–7 NKJV
6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
the Spirit of the LORD came upon Him from that day
1 Samuel 16:10–13 NKJV
10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

The Purpose of the anointing

The anointing IDENTIFIES the person chosen by God
young David was identified by the LORD
to be identified means to be chosen
God identified his chosen for the sake of those who seek him and his purpose.
the Christ was identified for the sake of zsimeon and Anna
The anointing APPOINTS/ORDAINS the person to the work
priests were anointed
Exodus 30:30 NKJV
30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.
kings and prophets were anointed
1 Kings 19:16 NKJV
16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
note - actual anointing did not always take place, but the appointment stands
Luke 4:18–19 NKJV
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:21 NKJV
21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
what’s the point?
God has appointed men and women who will do the work -
to build his church
to build his ministry
to bring people for him
The anointing PREPARES the person for the work ahead
1 Samuel 16:13 NKJV
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
the Spirit of God began to move and direct David’s life towards becoming God’s chosen king
young David’s preparation were the battles against the Philistines, and his conflict with king Saul
he killed Goliath
he respected Saul as God’s anointed
Jesus Christ’s preparation was the wilderness temptation
Luke 4:1–2 NKJV
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

The privileges that come with the anointing

Anointed ones are “highly favored”
Psalm 45:7–9 NKJV
7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. 8 All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad. 9 Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women; At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.
Psalm 18:50 NKJV
50 Great deliverance He gives to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.
Psalm 23:5 NKJV
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Anointed ones are secured and protected
Psalm 20:6 NKJV
6 Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand.
Psalm 89:20–24 NKJV
20 I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him, 21 With whom My hand shall be established; Also My arm shall strengthen him. 22 The enemy shall not outwit him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. 23 I will beat down his foes before his face, And plague those who hate him. 24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, And in My name his horn shall be exalted.
God’s protection extends to his family and possessions
Psalm 105:12–15 NKJV
12 When they were few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it. 13 When they went from one nation to another, From one kingdom to another people, 14 He permitted no one to do them wrong; Yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes, 15 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.”
to touch Abraham’s family is to touch the prophet of God
they are highly favored and protected because of the great work that is laid upon their lives

Who are God’s anointed ones today

The Spirit baptized people
1 John 2:20 NKJV
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
1 John 2:27 NKJV
27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
the abiding Holy Spirit is your anointing
You are personally CHOSEN by God - hand-picked!
Chosen before the foundation of the world
Identified by the Holy Spirit today
You are APPOINTED to a specific work
the good works that were prepared beforehand
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
your life, your existence, is directly connected to a specific work that you will give account to God on judgment day
You are BEING PREPARED TODAY for your future work
Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
“all things work together” because God has a purpose in your life
“all things work together” because God is preparing your life for that purpose
BECAUSE OF THIS -
you are highly favored
you are secured and protected from harm

Conclusion

Don’t waste your life looking for purpose and meaning in this world -
IN CHRIST YOU ALREADY HAVE A PURPOSE FOR LIVING!
Don’t envy the success of those who are outside of God’s will -
YOU ARE MORE HIGHLY FAVORED THAT THEM ALL
ILLUSTRATION - the inauguration of BBM as President
he was the people’s chosen leader -
as president,
he will receive the highest respect in the land
he will be immune from all suits for the next 6 years
Young David did not waste his anointing -
He felt God’s anointing over his life
he used and exercised his anointed position
he lived in the anointing
He depended on his anointing
he nurtured his anonting
