Theme: Sin’s Power Is Broken
Theme: Sin’s Power Is Broken
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
INTRO:
To be a servant of sin is to be in thralldom. The word thralldom means “the state of being under the control of another person or thing.” You are held captive against your will.
Paul says in verse 16 essentially that you become a servant/slave of whatever you choose to obey. Well, scripturally there are two things:
Either you can be a servant of sin or you can be a servant of God. Who are you serving?
Paul therefore says:
You can be a servant/slave to sin, which leads to death.
Or, you can obey God, which leads to righteous living.
Who you serve can be gauged not by what you say.....but how you live. Because, if you serve God, it will lead to righteous living, if you serve God, it will lead to holy living, if you serve God, if God LIVES INSIDE OF YOU.....WHAT IS IN YOU.....WILL MAKE IT’S WAY OUT OF YOU!!! You’ll see it in your walk, you’ll hear it in your talk, you’ll see Jesus in the way that you present yourself!!!
In verse 17 Paul records “But God be thanked, that ye were (past-tense) the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”
And then he says in verse 18:
“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
But then the question becomes:
HOW DOES ONE BECOME FREE FROM SIN?
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Key to freedom is truth. Jesus said “ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” So then what is truth?
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
It is the word of God that frees us!
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Jesus gave up his life, Jesus died and shed his blood so that he might sanctify and cleanse (the church/his bride) with the washing of water by the word!!!!
So when we hear the gospel, when we believe the gospel, when we accept the free gift of salvation that is offered to us by Jesus Christ, when we are saved, when we have truly been born again. We are sanctified and cleansed by the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
You CANNOT MAKE YOURSELF SPOTLESS, YOU CAN’T IRON OUT THE WRINKLES IN YOUR LIFE, YOU CAN’T GET RID OF THE ROUGH SPOTS, JESUS HAS TO WORK ON YOU!!!
You can’t snap your finger and your dress is nice and pressed out, your pants or nice and crisp and ironed out. NO!!! You gotta put it on the ironing board, you gotta put some heat to that fabric! You gotta press......and iron all of the rough spots out. Sometimes, you might have to iron a place several times.....before you can get it smooth.
That’s what Jesus is doing with us......testify two about 3 people and tell them.....HE’S WORKING ON ME!!!
No.....that is not a cop-out, no it is not an excuse to continue in sinful ways, it is not an excuse for you to deliberately do and live however you feel like living. NO, but it is a declaration, it is declaring that I NEED GOD IN MY LIFE....I’m not perfect, but I’m going on to perfection!!!! It’s me admitting, GOD I NEED YOU TO WORK OUT ALL THE ROUGH PLACES IN MY LIFE!!!! I NEED YOU TO WORK ON ME SOME MORE......SO THAT WHEN YOU RAPTURE THE CHURCH.......I’LL BE WITHOUT SPOT, WITHOUT BLEMISH, WITHOUT A WRINKLE!!!! LIFT YOUR HANDS AND SHOUT “GOD WORK ON ME EVEN THE MORE!!!”
You need to understand, that it is GOD that does the work in you! You need to understand that JESUS DIED so that you can be holy, He died so that you can be washed, HE DIED SO THAT YOU CAN BE SANCTIFIED, HE DIED......SO THAT YOU CAN BE HOLY!!!
HE DIDN’T DIE FOR YOU TO MAKE AN EXCUSE, HE DIDN’T DIE SO THAT YOU COULD REMAIN IN SIN.........HE DIED.......FOR YOU........TO MAKE YOU HOLY AND WITHOUT FAULT!!!
If you appreciate Jesus dying for you.....give God glory!
When you believe this, when you accept this, and you decide that I want to change my ways. I need to die to anything that is not like God. This is true repentance. When you are baptized in Jesus’ name. The scripture says:
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
You were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism.....THAT’S WHY WE BAPTIZE IN JESUS’ NAME!!!! THIS IS WHY THE APOSTLES BAPTIZED IN JESUS’ NAME!!! If you were baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost........what father? There are many fathers, there are many sons, there are many spirits. But there is a name! Each father has a name, each son, has a name......and believe it or not.....there are many spirits and those spirits have names too.
But Col 2:9 says:
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
In Christ dwells all the fullness of God in a human body!!!!
So if we call on Jesus Christ and if the fullness of God resides in Jesus.....then we call on the Father, we call on the Son, we call on The Holy Ghost!!! That’s why Matthew 28:19 says “name” not names.
So if we have been buried with Christ Jesus in baptism, we have joined him in his death. We have put to death the old lifestyle, we’ve put to death the old sinful habits.
Then just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
IF THE FATHER HAS THE POWER TO RAISE JESUS FROM THE DEAD.......THEN GOD HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE......AWWW YOU DON’T HEAR ME. IF GOD HAS THE POWER TO RAISE JESUS FROM THE DEAD, THEN GOD HAS THE POWER TO TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.......YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE IN FAITH!!!
Look at verse 6:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
When you believe the gospel, when you repent of your sins, when you are baptized in Jesus’ name (buried) our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, so that sin might lose its power in our lives!!!!
THAT MEANS, THE MOMENT THAT IT HAPPENS.....YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO BE LIBERATED!!! THAT HENCEFORTH........THAT HENCEFORTH, WE SHOULD NOT SERVE SIN.....OR THAT WE SHOULD BE FREE FROM THE POWER OF SIN!!!!
The scriptures declare in verse 9 that:
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
In other-words, Paul uses knowing to indicate that we can be sure! We can take it to the bank, that when Jesus rose......death had no more dominion of Him......death had no more power over Him.
Verse 10
When Jesus died, he died once, HE DIED ONE TIME, TO BREAK THE POWER OF SIN OVER OUR LIVES......HOW MANY BELIEVE THAT!?!?! BUT NOW HE LIVES, HE LIVES FOR THE GLORY OF GOD!!!
SO YOU ALSO, SHOULD CONSIDER YOURSELVES TO BE DEAD TO THE POWER OF SIN AND ALIVE TO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST!!!
This was what the Apostle Paul was referring to in Romans 6:17 when he said:
“But ye have obeyed from the heart, that form of doctrine which was delivered unto you.”
BUT NOW!!! We have been made free......FREE.....from the power of sin!!! FREE!!! from the bondage of sin!!! And now.....you have become servants of righteousness!!!
Verse 19:
I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Sin is depravity, it means that when we willfully engage in it, over time it gets worse and worse. Paul says in verse 19 that when we were slaves to impurity and lawlessness, it led ever deeper into sin.
For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
But now that we are slaves to righteous living, it should led us deeper and deeper into holiness and righteousness.
(Verse 20)
When we were servants of sin, we were free from righteousness or we can say that we were free from the obligation to do right.
You could do whatever you felt like doing. I could curse someone out and then go on about my business.
I could deliver a swift right-hook and then a left uppercut and then think nothing of it.
I could get drunk on a Friday or Saturday night and then only be concerned about a hangover on Sunday.
I could get in the bed and have sex outside of marriage, or be married and commit adultery.
Get high, gamble, lie, gossip, back-bite, have a heart full of hatred.
We were free from obeying the will of God, we were free from holiness and righteousness.
But now that God has freed us from sin, we have an obligation......we have an obligation to live right, we have an obligation to holy living, we have an obligation to honor God in the way that we live.
I didn’t want to do it at first.....but NOW THAT GOD HAS FREED ME!!!! I GOTTA LIVE FOR HIM!!! I GOTTA HONOR HIM......HE COULD’VE LET ME GO STRAIGHT TO HELL....BUT HE HAD MERCY ON ME!!! NOW I’M OBLIGATED TO LIVE FOR HIM!!!
(Verse 21)
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
Fruit is the manifestation of actions in a person’s life. If you are wicked, then you will manifest wicked actions. If you are holy, then you will manifest holy actions. Paul says that the wicked actions that we use to manifest....we are now ashamed of. These actions are actions that lead to death (doom).
(Verse 22)
But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
But now, being made free from sin....... now being free from the power of sin, we have become servants to God, and because we are servants to God, now because we are obligated to God, we have actions/we have fruit unto holiness, and those actions result in eternal life. I don’t just talk it......IT’S TIME TO STOP TALKING IT AND LIVE IT!!! Don’t say you are a Christian but your actions are still wicked actions.
We have to understand either our actions can lead to damnation and death or our actions can lead to holiness and eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ending:
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
