11321 W St. Martins Road Franklin, WI 53132 414-431-0532 Pastor Ken Prodzinski 7-3-2022 That You May Know: Testing the Spirits: (1 John 4:1-6) Sermon Idea: With vs. 24 of chapter 3, “We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us” John, essentially frames his next important test. In this section (1 John 4:1-6), John reminds his beloved ones that not every spirit is the same. Thus, he calls them to listen to the teaching that they receive with discernment because there are many false prophets who are in the world and they attempt to pervert the nature of Christ. The catastrophic result is that they subvert the veracity of the gospel and rob his little children of their fullness of joy. So, John calls them like us, to test the spirits to see if they are of God, with Christology being the central focus of the Doctrinal Test. Those who affirm the divine nature of Christ have the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of truth). And those who deny the salient truth of Christ’s divine nature are of the devil (the spirit of error). I. The Call for Discernment: (vs. 1) II. The Category for Discernment: (vs. 2-3) III. The Consequential Reality of Discernment: (vs. 4-6) Page 1 of 1 https://milwaukeebiblechurch-my.sharepoint.com/personal/dharrold_cornerstonefranklin_org/documents/sermons/1st john series/congregational outline for 7-3-2022.docx
