INTRODUCTION
Something happened this week I thought I would not see in my lifetime.
Roe vs. Wade was overturned and the decision to legalize abortion was returned to the individual states.
There have been other major events in our nation:
Moon landing 20 July 1969
Everything we do as Christians must be grounded in God’s Word.
Thus, the question I pose as it pertains to Roe vs. Wade and the question of abortion is does God’s Word guide us in our thinking or is it silent on this issue?
Sarah (married to Abraham)
“Genesis 21:2
“Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.
Gave birth to Isaac
Many nations were to come from Isaac
Rebekah (married to Isaac)
“Genesis 25:21
“21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.”
Gave birth to fraternal twins- Esau and Jacob
Jacob would wrestle with God and God changed his name to Israel
Rachel & Leah (married to Jacob)
“Genesis 30:1-2
“When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”
2 Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”
Gave birth to Joseph (the twelve tribes of Israel)
Joseph was sold in to slavery to Egypt but God used him to save many from famine as well as his family and establish the Israelite people
Manoah’s Wife (Manoah=to seek rest)
“Judges 13:2-3
“A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was sterile and remained childless. 3 The angel of the LORD appeared to her and said, “You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son.”
Gave birth to Samson
Samson judged Israel and brought them out from under Philistine oppression.
Hannah (married to Elkanah)
“1 Samuel 1:10-11, 19
“10 In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
“Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the LORD for him.”
Gave birth to Samuel
Samuel led Israel to follow God, was a prophet and was the last judge before God allows the people to follow their sinful desire for a human king.
