False Teachers

2 Peter 2:1–3 ESV
1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
The Question is not whether you ever hear the voice of a false teacher. because you will. Every day!! The real question is whether you can discern which messages are false.
2 Peter 2:1 ESV
1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
We start out seeing the word but so I had to back up to last Sunday.
2 Peter 1:21 ESV
21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Even though the ancient church we see Peter say that No Prophecy ever came from man, false prophets still disrupted the ancient church, so we must expect the same thing.
God has always “Tried and Proved his church by such a temptation as this.
These false teachers will secretly bring false heresies.
I like how the New Berry interlinear Bible interrupts it. It say will bring in Stealthily.
I have always heard the word Heresy but I have never looked it up. I always knew it was something bad or lies but the Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith defines it as:
Heresy
The rejection or distortion of a major element of Christian doctrine, particularly as defined in the church’s Creeds and confessions.
This is something I want to talk about a little today. This is where the false teachers a so easy to believe. because:

Smooth-tongued false teachers seldom deny Jesus Christ “who TAUGHT” but they do deny Jesus “who BOUGHT.” The devil hates the doctrine of the CROSS of Christ, and hence all the conflicting theories as to His death.

How Will me know a false teacher?
2 Peter 2:2 ESV
2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.
2 Peter 2:3 ESV
3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
1. False teachers are skilled at presenting themselves in a positive light
Matthew 7:15-16 “15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”
The only thing a bad tree is good for is fire wood.
False teachers are all about them. What they did to prosper the church. How they blessed someone, its all about me me me
They try to boast their holiness. (Copeland weather example)
2. They have a “form of godliness,” using Scripture and including some truth with their error
2 Timothy 3:1-5 “1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”
We saw in the previous example that we will know them by their fruit. Here is some of the bad fruit that they bear.
This is the Little God theory They express that because they are made in Gods image that they are just like him. They can perform the same miracles. Jesse Duplantis (Walking with Jesus and comforting him)
3. They're often powerful individuals, and Satan is usually behind their popularity
Matthew 24:24 “24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.”
Look at the claimed miracles that have been performed. Legs growing, backs healed. SO on. most of these miracles are unmeasurable.
Todd White Leg growing Example.

4. They cause divisions, especially with Christians who recognize their errors
Romans 16:17 “17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”
Galatians 1:6-10 “6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. 10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
The division of the church. I will tell you that the followers of false teachers are dedicated and if you want to see a vicious “Christian” call out one of their teachers.
5. They have followers We should never assume that a teacher's popularity is a sign of anointing from God.
2 Corinthians 11:3-4 “3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.”
Kenneth 1.8 million followers
Joel Olsteen 25 Million followers
TD Jakes 7 Million
John MacCarthur 628 thousand
6. They “secretly introduce” their false beliefs, hiding their errors with convincing explanations (2 Peter 2:1).(4)
2 Peter 2:1 “1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”
Religion Gospel (Works based)
Moralism Gospel (Make us good People)
Prosperity Gospel (Give and Receive)
Self Help Gospel (Be the better You)
Signs and Wonders (If you saved you will see signs and wonders)
Therapeutic Gospel (Jesus is the meeter of your needs)
Social Justice Gospel (Feed the needy and the poor)
7. Some will even claim to be the Messiah (Matthew 24:5).(5)
Matthew 24:5 “5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.”
There is a clip floating around in which Steven Furtick actually says he is GOD Almighty.
8. False prophets are forerunners to the Antichrist, drawing people away from the truth (1 John 2:18).
I John 2:18“18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.”
I John 2:26 “26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.”
9. They redefine Christ (2 John 1:6-11; 2 Corinthians 11:4).
2 John 1:6-11 “6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”
2 Corinthians 11:4 “4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.”
If you are worshiping a different Christ then you are worship a false God.
They make Christ a need full filler, a home boy, a puppet on a string. Some one that we can demand things off. One of the teachers I have heard actually referred to calling on Jesus like calling his dog.
10. They seldom have biblical lifestyles (2 John 1:6-11; Matthew 7:15-20).(6)
We saw this earlier when we discussed the Fruit they bear. If you look at their life style you see that it is not a Godly life style.
John 7:24 “24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.””
A lot of false teachers say not to Judge them because we all know that the Bible says judge not least ye be judged and the hole thing about the beam.
What to do about false teaching
1 Timothy 1:3–4 ESV
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
Ephesians 5:11 ESV
11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
Timothy even called out false teachers Hymenaeus and Alexander (they have destroyed their faith like a wrecked Ship.
2 John 1:10-11 “10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”
