Intro:

WHAT DO YOU THINK EMOTIONAL HEALTH IS OR LOOKS LIKE?
WHY DO WE NEED TO BE EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY?
So often we put an emphasis on the spiritual aspect of life/-sometimes the physical- and neglect other aspects of our make up.
Five Aspects of Being Human:
Physical
Spiritual
Intellectual
Social
Emotional
Luke 7:13 NLT
13 When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.
Luke 19:41 NLT
41 But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
Mark 14:34 NLT
34 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Mark 14:34 ESV
34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”
Mark 3:5 NLT
5 He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
Luke 7:9 NLT
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”
This study will focus on following Jesus, and gaining the courage to quit anything that does not belong to His kingdom or fall under His rule.
Has the Christian world or community placed much value on quitting?
What are some qualities that we have highly esteemed?
Endurance, Perseverance, Tenacity,
Quitting is not an attribute we tend to admire in ourselves or others.
The type of quitting we will be discussing is not about weakness or giving up in despair. It IS about about strength and choosing to live in the truth.
But this requires something: THE DEATH OF ILLUSIONS!
STOPPING TO PRETEND THAT EVERYTHING IS FINE WHEN IT IS NOT!
What do you think is a universal problem in marriages, families, friendships, and work places?
Perpetuating illusions! — its even inside the church
Biblical quitting goes hand in hand with choosing.
When we quit those things that are damaging to our souls or to the souls of others; we are freed up to choose other ways of being and relating that are rooted in love and lead to life.
When we quit fear of what others think we choose freedom
When we quit lies we choose truth
When we quit blaming we choose to take responsibility
When we quit faulty thinking, we choose to live in reality.
Ephesians 4:21–25 ESV
21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
We will discover that this type of quitting is a way of putting off falsehood and the old self.
Ezekiel 36:26 NLT
26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.
Ezekiel 11:19 NLT
19 And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart,
Ezekiel 11:19 ESV
19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
When we quit for the right reasons we are changed.
The Bible tells us there is a time for everything:
Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV
1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
This includes quitting—but it must be done for the right reasons, at the right time, and in the right way.
Read Cutting the Rope Story
Quitting can feel like we are cutting a lifeline—like someone, maybe even ourself is going to die.
Because of this often times people will not quit even in the church.
But there comes a point we can’t take it anymore.
Like Yates, we know we will die spiritually, emotionally, or otherwise unless we choose to quit and do things differently.
