Sermon
Paul says this is a mystery.
We will get to that later.
We are continuing to look at what happen to God’s chosen people, Israel, and why in the world they had this falling out with God.
God supposively all of a sudden moved on from them to the Gentiles.
Walk through the text
v25b
Partial hardening
What does this mean?
Usually involves the actions of God to harden, but also prior disobedience to God.
God historically doesnt harden hearts of those seeking Him
Where have we heard this before?
Pharoah
Is God justified in hardening someones heart?
absolutely
fullness of Gentiles
the counterpart to Israel.
There is a certain amount of time for the Gentiles to find faith, just like there was for Israel.
We do not have forever to find Christ.
That is the reality.
All Israel will be saved
Generically All israel will be saved, the nation as a whole, but not every single Israelite
Every single Israelite
All of Israel, as in the old israel and the new israel Romans 9:6
I would probably hold to definition 3, but the first two are possible because of the promises that God has made in the past to wipe out their sins.
(mentioned here as well) v26-27
work through the remainder of text and add commentary if comes to mind.
Paul is referring to this dependence we have, not only to God for our salvation but also on the other one not being God’s main focus.
probably wont get into this too much.
Finish with verse 25,
Mystery-would you say God’s word is mysterious?
This chapter has been a little bit, huh.
But in general, no.
Admit that my understanding of Israels salvation has been challenged this week.
Im not totally certain anymore that old israel’s salvation is based completely on faith like gentiles or new israel is.
You’ll remember this was a big discussion when we first got into Romans.
I was pretty sure of it.
I want to talk about being sure for a minute.
How sure are you of what you believe?
Hold up fingers, scale of 1 to 10
Some questions to ponder:
Why is it important to know the bible?
What are some ways you can know more about the bible?
How do you react when someone shares something biblical with you that you have never heard or just dont believe?
What are some ways that you can look deeper into that?
Explain how i handle it, listen first, dig deep, then see if i still believe it.
Typically i dont change my mind on biblical matters too often.
Is it important to always seek truth?
is it ok to change your mind on something biblical?
