Book of Ez / takes us back to Babylon / Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem / taken control of Promised Land / For years God had been warning His people / if they did not turn back to him / He would do send them into exile / but did they listen? NO / why would they / they are God’s people
They had been punished before / God always came to their aid / rescued / restored / So this time God sends Ezekiel / to be a different kind of prophet / Apparently speaking was not getting through so he is to be first theatrical prophet
Ezekiel 3:26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious people.
Doesn’t reopen his mount until Ez 24:27 / so he has to act this one out / It begins with scenes dramatizing upcoming years of exile / starvation of some / the remnant in Jerusalem being also sent to exile / after a small break / comes back for performance 2 / scenes depicting march of the temple / final fall / burning of Jerusalem / including temple / Final scene comes with added emphasis as Ezekiel loses that dearest to him / his wife
Crazy! This message / showing God’s people / they rejected God / so God was going to use the Babylonians to judge the people and the land
COI stunned! Would God really do this? This is OUR God / the temple is His / He won’t allow that / What about the land He promised to Abraham / Isaac / Jacob?
He wouldn’t / He couldn’t .... WOULD He?
They figured Ezekiel got it all wrong / maybe he’d gone mad / he was depicting fiction....
Then the final straw / they said to themselves / even if God does do this / He won’t act quickly
Ezekiel 13:8–16 “ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because of your false words and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign Lord. My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.
“ ‘Because they lead my people astray, saying, “Peace,” when there is no peace, and because, when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with whitewash, therefore tell those who cover it with whitewash that it is going to fall. Rain will come in torrents, and I will send hailstones hurtling down, and violent winds will burst forth. When the wall collapses, will people not ask you, “Where is the whitewash you covered it with?”
“ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my wrath I will unleash a violent wind, and in my anger hailstones and torrents of rain will fall with destructive fury. I will tear down the wall you have covered with whitewash and will level it to the ground so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you will be destroyed in it; and you will know that I am the Lord. So I will pour out my wrath against the wall and against those who covered it with whitewash. I will say to you, “The wall is gone and so are those who whitewashed it, those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her when there was no peace, declares the Sovereign Lord.” ’
