Remember, John the Baptist, not John the Disciple was the cousin to Jesus. Remember when Mary went to visit Elisabeth? OK, Are we all on the same page? John and Jesus knew each other way back in the womb. This was God’s plan, way way back.

John 1:6–8 “6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, To Jesus his cousin, to bear witness of the Light, The light, Jesus Christ that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.”

John was sent to say, “get ready,” pay attention, watch out. Anyone know anyone like that?

Matthew 3:1–4 “1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’ ” 4 Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.”

B. The message of John’s.....The message of repentance. Jesus preached repentance “Luke 13:3 “3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish..” John the baptist preached it John 1:23 “23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Wouldn’t you like to be known as “the voice of one crying in the city of SB?

The prodigal son repented. There has to be a process right? It’s starts usually when we start screwing up, making bad decisions, treating others bad.

Luke 15:17–19 “17 “But when he came to himself, (the son who left his home) he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”

C. The meaning of repentance that John was preaching was.....—v. 3. Compare with Isaiah 40:3. The meaning of repentance is threefold: (1) Turning around, (2) Changing of the mind, and (3) Being sorry enough to quit sinning. In plain words—get right with God!

So now are we clear on repentance? Some of us don’t want to go there do we? We are really not that bad of sinners, we probably won’t do this sin again, at least not today...

D. Let’s take a look at the manner of John and his presentation.—v. 4. John was dressed in the skin of an animal. He ate locusts and wild honey. It is said that Locusts taste somewhat like shrimp. OK, I’m all in LOL John in the entire story, pointed to Christ as the Lamb of God.

John 1:28–30 “28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

Matthew 3:7–9 “7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, 9 and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.”

C. For some reason the word Separation gets me in scripture. Verse 10 and 11 tells us: Get ready for heaven, or spend eternity in hell. Note these are God’s words, not man’s.

Matthew 3:10–11 “10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

The Holy Spirit, fire What? —v. 11. John was baptized in water, but Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit. A baptism of fire. When we receive Jesus as our Savior, God sends to us His Holy Spirit. If you have began using this Holy Spirit, if your like me, you can’t use it enough. Great things, loving things, heart filled things and changes began to take place. AMEN!

Mark 16:16 “16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. BAM Can it get any simpler than that? I don’t think so church. This means those who do not accept Jesus Christ as their Savior can not, could not, will not--- enter heaven.

2. Baptism requires burial in water, many of us have been baptised.

Paul tells us in Romans 6:4–6 “4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”

Colossians 2:12–13 “12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,”

So we are on a journey here aren’t we church? Let’s say we want Mike to teach us guitar? Well, first we probably will need to make the decision to want to play the guitar right? Whats next? We can do the “I’ll do it my way” method or we can do the best we can and find a great player or teacher.

Once we find Mike and contact him, we agree to what we need, a guitar, a lessons book, a time to read and practice. Then, the process is under way right? Just like we learn in scripture. Once God calls us to Jesus, there are things we must start doing, daily.

B. So we read in scripture what happens when John baptises Jesus don’t we? We are given a very descriptive picture, or a “visual” as I sometimes call it of the “Spirit of God.”—vv. 16–17

Can you imagine? Hearing God’s voice, we would most likely DOUBT right? Who, what was that? UHHHHHHH did you hear that?

1. Baptism by immersion—“came up out of the water.” John baptised Jesus, in and below water. I have told you all, I was “re baptised” in the river Jordan in 2016, a cold January day in Israel, the water was as warm as bath water. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!
