1 Peter 3:18 KJV 1900
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Christ willingly left heaven to suffer on earth, for us
the love that it takes, the care
think about how much love and care that truly takes - very much
sometimes it’s hard to imagine these things, but He love EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US enough to come suffer for
the patience, the endurance, the long-suffering
rejected by all those close to Him
His love and care was just cast aside and not appreciated
we all know how it feels to not be appreciated for something we’ve done
the lashes, the crucifixion, the mental suffering
not only was there the suffering through His life, but it also ended in an awful way
BUT we know it’s glorious in the end, we’ll talk about that shortly
it’s a comfort knowing that when we suffer for doing right, we suffer according to the example of Christ
the just for the unjust
not only did Christ suffer this way, but He was the least deserving person there could ever be.
sinless for the sinner, He’s the Good Shepherd who laid His life down for His sheep
QUICKLY - Some people use sheep as a derogatory term, but we should be PROUD to be a sheep under the Good Shepherd
we are truly blessed to be able to be His sheep
We all also know how it is to suffer unjustly, how that can make us feel, but Christ went through a lifetime of this for us
Christ suffered many temptations, but He succeeded each and every time, He was the perfect sacrifice, unblemished in all His ways
“that He might bring us to God”
We know that Christ paid the penalty for our sins on the cross, He took the punishment for us
He didn’t have to, He did this willingly because of His love for us, to welcome us into the family of God
and when we get saved we receive the Holy Spirit of God inside of each and every one of us, and incredible blessing. think about it!
sometimes it’s hard to fully imagine this, that we are able to have a personal relationship with the God of the universe
The God who created the earth, the animals, the stars and galaxies, the plants and animals, even US
He created us for a reason, He wants us around, to be in contact with Him, to be close to Him
We pray, and He listens,
He doesn’t have to listen, but He does
think about what a blessing it is, to have contact and a relationship with the God of this universe, who breathed the breath of life into us
what better thing could anyone in the world have? we are blessed like no other?
we have a great hope, a marvelous light to guide us
He moves in us, we get to know Him through His Word and the Holy Spirit inside who moves in us, we love Him by keeping His commandments
and we know that He loves us too, it’s evident by what He’s done for us when we didn’t deserve it
we can only be in union with God through Christ, because of His payment for our sins and the fact that He sits at the right hand of the Father
“put to death…quickened”
quickened - “to make alive”
so we’re talking about Christ being put to death in the flesh, but rising again, made alive spiritually
look at what happens to us, we were dead spiritually in our sin, but through Christ, we are made alive spiritually
we are made whole, complete
those who are unsaved are missing something, they are incomplete, they are spiritually missing something
they’re in a path that leads to nowhere
what true meaning do they have to their life and what theyre doing?
Proverbs 16:25 KJV 1900
25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
James 4:14 KJV 1900
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Ecclesiastes 2:5–11 KJV 1900
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: 6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees: 7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me: 8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. 9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 2:21 KJV 1900
21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
solomon is saying that you can build up great treasures in life, you can do all of these great things, but without God, what does it matter?
“you can’t take it with you?”
he talks in the last verse about there could be a man who builds up great things and works hard in wisdom, but after he dies someone irresponsible could get it, who didn’t work for it, then what of all his labour and wisdom? what good is it doing him after death?
Christ tells us to store up treasures in heaven Matthew 6.19-21
Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
so when we store up treasures in heaven, we are doing something meaningful, that lasts beyond this life, we are doing spiritual work for God
this is work that is meaningful
not only is this meaningful for us but it’s meaningful to God at the same time!
this is fulfilling work in our life, this is work that matters, and it’s God’s work. Matthew 9.36-37
Matthew 9:36–37 KJV 1900
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
we will answer for one day for what we’ve done, how we’ve used our time on this earth
do we want to be working for meaningful things for God? or do we want to be spending our precious time here on earth building up things on earth that we can’t take with us?
so when we are made alive in the spirit through Christ’s sacrifice for us, we are renewed people, were changed people, so the things we do should change
John the baptist tells the pharisees
Matthew 3:8 KJV 1900
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
John 14:15 KJV 1900
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
we’re going to use this passage from ezekiel for a visual
Ezekiel 37:1–10 KJV 1900
1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the Lord. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
just as Jesus tells us the harvest is truly plenteous, we become a laborer for God, a labor that is not in vain
solomon talked about his earthly labor that was vain, it was labor for himself primarily, it was also for an inheritance
but he himself, the wisest man in the world, says it was all in vain
so as we labor for God, we have something more, a life that is not in vain, a life that has meaning, a life that is pleasing to God, that brings us closer to Him
this labor for God is planting the seed, it’s us
LIFE IS NOTHING WITHOUT GOD
do you want a life without God? a life in the world’s culture?
look around, see what the world is like, what they do for fun, how they spend their time
it’s contrary to God’s Word in so many ways
the drinking, the partying, the drugs, the culture on tv and media, the music, look at whats popular
the world is increasingly hedonistic, only caring about what makes them feel good in the moment, even if it’s destructive in the long term
consequently, there is a huge increase in depression and anxiety, people who live these lifestyles, but inside they are unhappy, and often hate their lives
but if we live a life with God, close to God, and how God wants us to live, we can be different
we can be fulfilled, we can have something to look forward to beyond just moment to moment
we can take part in things that leave an impact on the world, that helps others, that makes a difference
we can do things that make us and others happier, show them the marvelous light of Christ, the great hope that we have
this is the complete opposite result of following the worlds path, their lifestyle leads to unhappiness, unfulfilment, and eventually death having done nothing of eternal consequence
Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
but as a Christian we can store up our treasures in heaven, do things that make a difference forever, live a life according to God’s plan, which in turn makes us happy
