1 Peter 5:10-11 NIV
“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.”
“It’s Going to Take a Little While “
1 Peter 5:10-11 (NIV)
Quote: Christians are to live with the understanding that God’s purposes realized in the future require some pain in the present.
Note: as verse 10 attests (cf. 1:6; also 2 Cor. 1:3–7). perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle. These four words speak of strength and resoluteness. God is working through the Christian’s struggles to produce strength of character.
Some of us
Don’t mind going thru somethings
As long as it
Don’t last long
For some of us
It’s not so much
The Pain
But “How Long “ will I have to ENDURE the pain
Peter is telling these Christians
That it’s going to be awhile
But YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE IT
And what Peter is doing here
He’s trying to get these Christians
To ENDURE what God has ALLOWED
Because
It’s in this SEASON of SUFFERING
That God is going
To give you
A Spirit of Stability
Because we have to many Christians
That’s standing still
And going backwards
Instead of growing
In the Grace & Knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
When the Season of Suffering comes
So, Peter is encouraging them
Thru the process
That God is making them BETTER
And how they are going
To be better and handle the process
Is by God’s Grace -- PRAISE THE LORD
In the text
We will see
That God is going to use
Their suffering as a TOOL
But He also
Has a tool
For the suffering
And it’s called Grace
In chapter One
Of 1st Peter
Peter encourages them about their suffering
And that their suffering
Is going to be SEASONAL
1st. It’s Seasonal ( V. 1:6 )
2nd. It’s Strengthening ( V. 1:7A )
3rd. It’s Survivable ( V. 1:7B )
Verse 7 of 1st Peter
Peter says
Their lives was being tried by fire.
That phrase “ tried by fire “
Gives the imagery or thought
Of a potter working with clay
It is a pottery phrase
When Peter talks about
Their lives being tried by fire
He’s liken their lives
To what a potter does to the clay
There’s a process
That the potter has to use
To move the clay
From the shop to the show room
The potter is not investing
All of his time, talent & treasure & resources
To allow the pottery to stay in the shop
But the potter
Is trying to move the clay
from the shop to the show room
But in order for the clay to make that process
There’s several things
That the potter has to do to the clay
1st. The potter has to FIND the clay
2nd. He has FORM the clay
3rd. He has to FRAME the clay
4th. He has to FORTIFY the clay
5th. HE FINISHES the clay
6TH. Then he has to Furnace the clay
1st. FIND the clay — clay has to be found, look for outside in the dirt
2nd. FORM the clay — He has to have an image in his mind how he wants the clay to
look like. ( vase — ashtray — Bowl )
3rd. FRAME the clay — He puts his hand on the clay & start framing
4th. FORTIFY the clay — but the clay is frail so the clay has be strengthen to be able to be
used.
Now after the potter has FOUND — FORM — FRAME — FORTIFY the clay.
Now the potter has to use something
And the only thing at his disposal
That he can make the clay fortified is a furnace.
And now the potter turns on his furnace to 660 degrees - 1500 degrees.
Because the only way
the clay is going to get fortified
is by some fire
The good news is
before the potter puts the clay into the furnace
He put a glaze all over the clay
Because the potter don't want the clay
to look like what it's going INTO
Note: The same thing that the potter does to the clay is the same thing God does to you and I .
Note: God ( Found us — Formed us — Framedus — We was Fragile Fortified us ) —
Put us in the Furnace — God put something on us GRACE )
Note: The only reason we don’t look like what we’ve been through is because God got a glaze on us ( GRACE )
Note: you don’t look like —-> Divorce— Cancer — Layoff — buried mother — buried child — bankruptcy — foreclosure — bad relationship — transplant — depression — sickness etc.
Peter won’t these Christians
To understand that
You’re being “ TRIED BY THE FIRE “
1 Peter 5:1-14: Talks about how the church is to function under suffering: Be Faithful
1 Peter 5:10-14 Talks about the Suffering of the believer: God’s Provision & Power
5:10. Peter had encouraged
his readers to endure suffering
in such a way
that the grace of God
would be made manifest in their lives.
Now in a closing word
of benediction
he committed them to
the God of all grace (cf. 4:10).
The benediction
briefly summarizes
Peter’s message of encouragement
Christians’ suffering
will last only a little while
while their glory in Christ
to which they were called
will be eternal (cf. Rom. 8:17–18; 2 Cor. 4:16–18).
Verse : 11. To Him be the power (kratos, “might”)
forever and ever. Amen
[ There’s several different types of POWER ]
Matthew 28:18
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”
”Exousia” [ authorithy ; power ]
Acts 1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
” dynamis “ [ power – explosive power ]
Ephesians 6:10
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”
” kratos “ [ power; might – demonstrated power ]
Peter won’t these Christians to have
That demonstrated power
While they are going thru
Their suffering
And God is going to
Manifest His grace in their lives
In this benediction
similar to the one in Peter 4:11
Peter praised Christ
who has all power for all times (cf. Rom. 11:36; 1 Tim. 6:16).
Certainly,
He has the power
to strengthen His own
as they undergo persecution
It is likely that Peter
now focused on
God’s strength
as the means
by which believers
obtain their eternal reward.
The one who called believers
by his grace
will also enable them
to persevere until the end.
He begins
by designating God
as “the God of all grace.”
“Grace”
is a favorite word of Peter’s (1:2, 13; 2:19, 20; 3:7; 4:10; 5:5, 12),
and here it means
that God is both
the possessor and giver
of all grace
The sufferings of believers
are intense,
but God’s grace
is stronger in the MIDST
This grace is expressed
particularly
in God’s calling
of believers to eternal glory
Note: Here it should simply be said (see esp. 2:9) that “calling” refers to God’s effective work by which he inducts believers into a saving relationship with himself.
A Spirit of Stability
1 Peter 5:10
There needs to be a spirit of stability, and that stability comes from the grace of God. He is “the God of all grace.” (1 Peter 5:10) And, what will that grace do?
1st God’s Grace will Fit you
1 Peter 5:10
First of all, it says,
“Make you perfect.” (1 Peter 5:10)
Now, that word perfect
does not mean “mature,”
as the other word
for perfect means,
but it actually means
“to mend.”
It was a word
used for the mending of a net
that had been broken,
or it was the word
used for the setting
of a bone
that had been broken.
And, what he’s saying is, here,
that God is going
to make us fit.
Now, many times
we get unfit;
we get out of shape
We do like Simon Peter did,
and the devil gets us.
And, he breaks our bones,
and he tears our nets.
But, the Lord Jesus is there—hallelujah!—
with His grace to restore us,
to mend us,
to make us fit.
Now, there are some of you here today
that He wants to do that for,
and His grace will do that
You’ve gotten bent out of shape?
You’ve gotten away from the Lord?
Sin in your life?
You’ve failed Him?
You’ve gone down?
You’ve disappointed Him?
He’ll mend your net.
He’ll tie up those loose ends.
He’ll set that bone again straight,
and Jesus will heal you today
1st God’s Grace will Fit you
2nd God’s Grace will Firm you
He says, “And stablish you.” (1 Peter 5:10)
You know what that means?
You’re part of the establishment
You’re not going to be blown around
You’re not going to be maneuvered
The devil is not going to shove you around
Aren’t you tired of being shoved around by the devil?
1st God’s Grace will Fit you
2nd God’s Grace will Firm you
3rd God’s Grace will Force you
“strengthen [you].” (1 Peter 5:10)
The emphasis here
however
is on psychological strength
and therefore
it may be more appropriate
in some languages
to render give you … strength as “cause your heart to be strong” or “to cause your thoughts to be strong.”
1st God’s Grace will Fit you
2nd God’s Grace will Firm you
3rd God’s Grace will Force you
4th God’s Grace will Fix you
“settle you.” (1 Peter 5:10)
That word settle means
“to lay a foundation.”
Note: a sure foundation may be rendered in terms of “cause you to always endure” or “cause you not to be moved in your trust in Christ.”
“ It’s Going to take a Little While “
God’s Grace is amazing !!!!!!!!!!
