Call To Unity
Study by California Berkley stated that couples who said WE were more successful than couples who used I and ME
Background
Philippi was a Roman colony and it was also very diverse in beliefs.
Few Jews lived there and gentile religion was all over the place.
Paul who authored Philippians ministered there.
He had initial difficulties there sharing the gospel, but through that grew a strong bond with the believers there.
Paul makes a strong statement about the call of Christians that we are going to figure out through this series.
Unity in prayer
How is your prayer life?
Both in public and in private?
Is See you at the pole the only time your seen praying in public?
PRAYER IS OUR PATHWAY TO A POWERFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Verse 5 mentions that because of their partnership in the gospel with Paul and their consistent uplifting to him in prison and on his journeys.
Verse 7 says they were partners with Paul in grace.
The primary way that they did this was through prayer.
Praying for Paul as he was in prison facing persecution.
Sending people to see Paul.
Sending gifts.
They were just there for Paul.
I think that is something that we lack in so often is being there for people during their troubles.
Unity in advancing the gospel
What are ways we can show unity in advancing the gospel?
Paul explained that the persecution he was feeling was something that advanced the gospel!
It started with the Imperial Guard who heard Paul’s message as they took shifts guarding him
Sometimes God puts you in an tough situation to reach tough people
The next opportunity was with Christians.
We always fall on one side or the other of what Paul describes as those who proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition or those who preach out of love.
Paul certainly would have wanted all to preach the gospel out of love, but understood the gospel wasn’t about him but about God so he didn’t mind that people preached out of hate for him so long as Christ was proclaimed.
Unity in living for Christ
How do we show unity in living for Christ?
When the Church Body lives as a “we” instead of a “me” it becomes easier to walk with Christ.
Accountability
Responsibility
Inability
Paul states that to live is Christ and to die is gain.
This is exactly how we show unity in living for Christ.
What Paul was saying is if i continue living every aspect of my life will be to bring God glory, but if I die i have confidence that I will be with him in heaven.
Paul makes a call for unity amongst believers in an area where culture has infiltrated the church.
