Romans 6:1-5
I. Paul digs deeper
a. For weeks we have studied how Paul teaches us that we are righteous because of Jesus Christ. But still he goes deeper into the newness of life we have in Jesus Christ.
b. Where there is much sin, there is much grace
i. So let’s sin more so we can get more grace
1. Absolutely Not!!!!
ii. God’s grace is abundant – no matter how much you sin there is more than enough grace for your forgiveness
1. As much as you need there is more available
2. Jesus is enough
II. Died to sin
a. As we grow in Christ we are not trying to uncover who really are
i. Our old self was full of sin and unrighteousness.
ii. We don’t get a remodel we are a new creation. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
1. The old has passed away – quit looking for it.
b. How can we still live to it
III. Are you unaware – what you don’t know?
a. All of us who were baptized – not some, few, part but all
i. Buried with him
1. We go under the water
a. Jesus in the earth – swallowed up
b. We are Christ like
i. We die to our sins via Jesus
1. (yes we live a life dying to our self but that will come later)
2. It is as if we were with Jesus while he hung on the cross and laid in the tomb.
2. We come up out of the water
a. Resurrected – new life
b. Children of Israel
i. Came out of slavery
1. We were slaves to sin – more on that later
2. Then they walked through the parted Red Sea
a. Dying to their sin
b. The sea closed over the Egyptians – killing their sin / their past
c. They come through as a new people – a free people
d. There was no going back – though they would often want too
c. Quit trying to go back to Egypt.
IV. Just as Christ – raised to new life
a. Christ was raised by the glory of the Father vs. 4
i. Glory = Weighty Importance and shining majesty that accompany God’s presence
1. God presence – his up close and personal involvement – he is not a distant God
2. We think about God having glory and us giving God glory
a. Here Paul says Jesus was raised by God’s glory
i. By his power, his majesty, his authority
ii. NLT – by God’s glorious power
ii. Again the Exodus – Exodus 14:1-4, 15-18
iii. It brought God glory to deliver the Israelites and judge the Egyptians
iv. It brought God glory to raise Jesus from the dead and bring judgement on our sin
1. The resurrection proved that Jesus was who he said he was the Son of God and it brought God glory for he is the only one that can bring life.
b. So we walk in the newness of life
i. To walk means to live, our whole being
1. We eat, sleep, breathe in the newness
2. No days are old for we walk each day in the newness of life.
ii. Just as Jesus was raised from the dead so are we – Just as!!
V. United with Christ
a. We are like Christ
i. So we are like Christ in his death and his life
1. Jesus death to sin becomes our death to sin – He does the work!!
2. We are called to die to our self and find life in Christ Galatians 2:18-20
a. Try to rebuild my old self, my sin, my attempt to be good / righteous through my own actions – the law
ii. Philippians 3:9-11
1. United with Christ in death and resurrection (live in the power of)
Romans 6:6-14
VI. Our old self was crucified (Paul has his hammer out again)
a. Repeating same theme from vs. 4
b. The body (our old self) that was ruled by sin is rendered powerless!!!
i. Not by our effort by Jesus Christ – death and resurrection
ii. No longer enslaved to sin
1. We died – came out of Egypt – passed through the waters of death
c. Colossians 1:13-14
i. Rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of Jesus – we have a new king who rules and reign over us!!
VII. Live to God
a. Jesus died once and for all – it was enough – no more sacrifices are needed.
b. Jesus now lives every day to God – notice it says to God
i. To God, for his glory and his honor – not his own
c. Now we consider ourselves dead to sin
i. Yes in this world we struggle with sin – but it no longer holds any power over us
ii. Because now we ae Alive to God through Jesus Christ
1. We live not for our self but for God’s glory – we live to God!!
a. Not out of our own ability but through Christ
i. God knew we could not live to him, even after faith in Jesus, on our own
1. He sends us the Holy Spirit to help us
a. Spirit at salvation and Baptism of Holy Spirit
VIII. Do not let sin reign in our mortal bodies
a. Only one King who should reign
b. This means we also struggle and war against sin
i. Devote yourself to good works – Titus 3:1-9
ii. Colossians 3:1-10
c. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin – weapons of unrighteousness
i. But to those who are alive from the dead – offer yourself to God
1. I am his, may my life make much of him
a. My calling and purpose is not about me (start a business)
IX. Sin will not rule over you
a. For you are not under the law – you must obey
b. But under grace – God’s gift to us – not by the law
i. Life and death of Christ
ii. Power of the Holy Spirit
1. Renewing our mind – being sanctified
iii. Because of grace we are no longer slaves to sin
c. Read vs. 10-11 – In Christ
i. We are in Christ, not outside, not in close proximity – we are in, wrapped up, covered up, engulfed by
d. Not today Satan for I am in Christ and you are not!
i. Not tomorrow either, nor the next day
ii. Not even in my past for I walk each and every day in the newness of life in Jesus Christ
e. So consider your life dead to sin and alive to Christ
f. For I Live to God for his glory, honor – and that is the best life
