Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

What does a prophet do?
What does a prophet do?
A Prophet speaks on God’s behalf, calling people away from sin and toward a renewed relationship with God.
Well, let’s take a look at the examples from the Old Testament.
Old Testament prophets spoke on God’s behalf, calling people away from their idolatry and unfaithfulness and toward a renewed covenant relationship with God.
Some of the greatest prophets performed Miracles.
Elijah and Elisha performed miracles. Elijah performed seven recorded miracles. Elisha, who had asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, performed fourteen miracles of healing and restoration (one even after he was dead, when his bones brought a man back to life).
Moses is often classified as the first prophet in Israel. He’s the one who received the word from God and gave it to the Israelites. He’s the one who ground down the golden calf and fed it to the Israelites. He crafted the serpent on the stick so that those who believe might have a way of living when they were afflicted by serpents. He performed miracles through the leading of the Lord- the parting of the dead sea, the water from the rock. If there ever were a prophet, Moses would be one of them.
And yet, Moses is not the ultimate prophet.
Moses himself prophesied of this fact:
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—
It is to him you shall listen.
There was a greater prophet, one even greater and more foundational than Moses, who would speak God’s word to his people so that they might be led away from sin and into the way of life.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

In sum, the gospels record 37 miracles of Jesus.
Gospel of John records seven such miracles, showing that he indeed was a prophet. We know that he did many more miracles than seven, but John the author includes the seven to highlight the point that Jesus is a prophet. And note: all of these “signs” are regarding healing and restoration.
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
You see him compared to Elijah and to Moses
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

He commissions his church to speak on his behalf to the world
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Part of our church ministry, forming a statement of belief.

He is our Prophet, Priest, and King.
As our Prophet, he is the Truth and Word from God who calls sinners to repentance, proclaims forgiveness and reconciliation, and announces the coming day of judgment.

In the next few weeks we’ll review the rest of our statement. But for now, it is important to clarify the Truth about the Son of God as a prophet because it has important implications for our lives.

Are you living in sin? Repent
Are you trapped by the guilt of your sin? Christ has forgiven.
Are you aware of the judgment day? There is a coming day of judgment. This one fact should change all of our behavior.
If you are hearing his call and responding to Jesus’ prophetic word, then

That was to call people to repentance from sin and toward a renewed relationship with God, which we know is only obtainable through the blood of Jesus Christ.
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,
This is not only a warning for the unbelievers, but for those who do believe. Every word which flows from our mouth will have weight before the Lord.
We are to be stewards of every breath we are given.
So are you helping others be prepared for the day of judgment?
The Bible tells us this is not only for their joy, but for ours also
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—
the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—
that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
