Doing the Work of God
Doing the Work of God
On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
I. Their Motive in Looking for Jesus.
They ate of the Loaves.
The crowd follows Jesus to Capernaum. Same kind of People of today Looking for food, not eternal life.
Christ was offering Himself to them and they were interested in the physical need not spiritual.
A. Our Spiritual soul needs assurance of salvation.
B. Recognize how God is working around us. see Jn.14:17
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
C. Miraculous Signs - God draws us to Himself.
II. What are the Works we should Do?
What does God require from us?
A. Have Faith in Christ to Believe in Him. see Jn. 3:15
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
B. The Law Problem for the Jews - see Rom. 3:28 “For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.”
III. The Real Bread from Heaven. Jn. 6:32
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
Notice here how Jesus moves away from Moses and the Law (works) to say here and now present tense true bread is now being served.
Illus. The aroma of Bread baking (see Pro. 9:5
“Come, eat of my bread
And drink of the wine I have mixed.
Vs 35 Jesus said Iam the bread of Life; I am the Light of the world; I am the gate; I am the good Shepherd; I am the resurrection and the life; I am the way, the truth and the Life, I am the true vine.
IV. Jesus challenges them to receive His Salvation for eternal Life.
Communion with Christ is:
Abiding is walking with Him
see 1Jn 2:6
He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
Loving the Brethren - 1 Jn 2:10
The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
Unity /Fellowship 1 Jn2:19
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
Truth/belonging 1Jn. 2:24
Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
Confessing 1 Jn. 4:15
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
Spirit in Power - 1 Jn. 3:24
Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
Conclusion: Jesus wants us to be partakers of His offering of Himself to us by receiving Him as Lord and savior. Will you trust Him now, Today?
