I. Intro.
You’re In The Mess But Not Of It (John 17:9-19)
A. The world in which we live is a mess.
1.
Our Government is a mess, our communities are a mess, and many of our homes are a mess.
2. And the reason our world is a mess, is because people are messed up in their sins.
3. Which makes our world a mess.
4. The title of the message is— “You’er In The Mess But Not Of It.
5. Now, I hope the title of the message doesn’t sound to crude or distasteful.
6.
The title came to me as I reflected on what my wife said to me about “how the world was in a mess” as she was reading and listening to the News on her computer.
B. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, Sin has messed people up.
1.
And ever since then, the world has been a mess.
2. And before you and I were saved by God’s, grace we were messed up in our own sins in a messed up world.
3.
But the priestly prayer of Jesus in John 17:6 let’s us know that God takes messed up people out of a messed up world and gives them to Jesus to be saved.
John 17:6 (KJV 1900)
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
4. Before we were saved we were a mess in our sins.
5.
But 1 Cor 6:11 says—
6. God saves messed up people and uses them in a messed up world.
7.
So what I would like to share with with you today from this message is the spiritual realities of being in the world but not of the world as a believer.
8.
These spiritual realities are true because Jesus prayed for them to be true and real in our lives.
9.
These spiritual realities will enable you to overcome the adverse circumstances you will face in life.
10.
These spiritual realities are meant to sustain, keep you spiritually secure in god’s grace.
11.
And it is my prayer that that these realities will become more and more real to you as you walk by faith and not by sight.
12.
Because to be in this world and at the same time not be of the world requires a walk of faith.
The first spiritual reality is—
II.
You Belong to God In This World (John 17:9-12)
A. As a Believer in Jesus Christ You belong to God not the world.
1.
The world in which we live has put everything possible in place to own you.
2. They have records and document on you.
3.
They have your birth certificate, your social security, IDs, registrations and the like.
4. So the world may think it owns you in this physical realm but it does not own you in God’s spiritual realm.
5.
Because Jesus declared in his priestly prayer in John 17:9-12 that those who have been given to Him belong to God not the world (read).
6.
And those who belong to God have put their faith trust in Jesus Christ as their savour.
B. Yes, we are in the physical reality of this this world.
1.
A world with real circumstances.
2. A world with real problems.
3. A world that is a mess.
4. But let it be a comfort to every believer in Jesus as their savour that they belong to God.
6.
Their names are now written in the lamb book of life.
7. We are now, right now, citizens of heaven.
8.
We are in the world not as slaves but as victors.
9. We are in the world not as children of disobedience but as children of God.
10.
And we are in the world not as people of the world who rather worship and put their trust in created things rather than the God who created them.
11.
We are in the world and not of it to glorify God our creator.
Another spiritual reality is—
II.
The Believer is Kept By God In the World.
A. Jesus prayed to God father to keep His believers while they are in this messed world.
1.
The word keep literally means to “watch over,” to “guard,” and to “preserve.”
2. Jesus wants us to believe and trust his prayer to God the father for us.
3.To believe and trust that God is watching over us.
4.
And that He has his ministering angels are guarding us.
5.
And that His Holy Spirit is preserving our salvation with the seal of His power.
B. Our faith in Jesus Christ is the guarantee that we belong to God in this world of sin.
1.
And to assure that we are kept in this world, Jesus prayed that we “may be one” as He and the Father are one in John 17:11—
2. I see the believers oneness with both God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ, while in this world, as a spiritual united front.
3.
According to Wikipedia “a united front is an alliance of groups against their common enemies...”
4. It’s used militarily and politically for a common goal and purpose.
5.
However, when I read the word’s of Jesus’ prayer to the Father in John 17:11-15 for believers to be one as Jesus and the Father are one.
6.
United in purpose with a common goal in the world.
7. A world with enemies towards God, and towards those whose faith is in Jesus Christ whom God has sent.
8. Jesus prays for us believers, in Him, to be a united front in this world with a common goal and purpose .
9.
You want to know what that common goal and purpose is?
10.
Jesus tells us what that common goal and purpose is in John 17:21-22—
11.
That’s our goal and purpose as a united front with both Jesus Christ and God the Father.
12.
To bear witness of Jesus Christ in this world so that they may and be saved, and let the world see the glory of Jesus Christ that is in us.
13.
The glory that Jesus has given to believers in Him, is our united front against satan and the evil that is in this world.
There is also the spiritual reality of how we as believers are—
III.
In the world But Not Of It (John 17:15-19)
A. Lest’s read John 17:15-19—
1.
How is it possible to be in this corrupt world of sin with its messed up people but not be of it
2. How is it possible to as a Christian to interact with the world but at the same time not be of it.
3. Jesus’ priestly prayer of sanctification for us makes it possible.
4. “Sanctify Refers to God’s ongoing work to set His people apart for His purposes [in the world] (Faithlife Study Bible).
5. We are in the mess of this world but at the same time we are not of it.
6.
We are in the mess of this world but we have be cleansed by the word of God’s truth
7. We have been washed, and regenerated by the by the Spirit of God.
8. That’s how we can be in the world but not of it.
9. We are in the mess of this world to glorify God and our Lord and savour Jesus Christ.
10.
We are in the mess of this world for God’s purpose.
10.
If we will continue in God’s word, the truth of God’s word will keep us free from the world.
B. In John 17:13 The words of Jesus’ prayer and what He spoke in the world was for the purpose of His joy being fulfilled in us.
1.
While we are in this world, His joy will sustain us.
2. His Joy will satisfy us.
3.
And His joy will be full of glory in us.
4. But we must continue in his joy.
5.
And the only way we can continue in his joy while in this world is not to be of it.
6. You’re in the mess of this world and the same His joy is being fulfilled in you.
