Big Idea of the Message: God calls all of us to follow Him wholeheartedly.

Compassion

So before we can grasp Matthew 10:1-4 we have look back a little bit to Matthew 9 and specifically v. 36 -38;
Matthew 9:36–38 NKJV
36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Before you can have compassion for someone you have to have a concern for their personhood;
Now I understand that people make choices and these choices can put them in sketchy situations however, this does not change Who created them;
Look at Matthew 9:36 again;
Matthew 9:36 NKJV
36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
Some people, not all, are where they are due to a lack of guidance in their live’s;
Now the church has not been a very helpful guide at times;
Why, because sometimes we are to focused on pointing out sin before we love the sinner;
And then sometimes, more than we want to admit, people in the church are acting just like the sinners they condemn, yes even the one at the pulpit;
Jude 22–23 ESV
22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
Jesus even says “...like sheep having no shepherd.” meaning that people, lead by religious leaders, turned away from God;
Now we are not called to condone, endorse or elevate sin yet if we started compassion maybe our voices would be heard;
Where is your compassion?

Reason

As Jesus looked at the people, the shepherd less sheep, with compassion He made two points;
Matthew 9:37 NKJV
37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Jesus was sharing the “Reason” for what He would do next - send out laborers;
Pastor Jayson and I have been thinking about this question for the last month;
“What is the church?”
Now the immediate answers - or the taught answers should I say - is the gathering of like minded people or the individual Christian;
Now these answers in not necessarily wrong and has a lot of validity;
But consider this for a moment;
“The church is the movement of God”
God moves His people to move His word into a dying world;
But what happens when “The Church” does not fulfill it’s “Reason” commissioned by Jesus;
Jesus told His disciples, in Pastor Tim wording “the harvest is plentiful but the workers not so much”;
When the church does not breath God’s word it will become unresponsive which can lead to death;
Are you fulfilling your “Reason”?

Mission

Now as we get to where we began - Jesus called His disciples (apostles) to go under His authority to fill the need of laborers;
Matthew 10:7 NKJV
7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
They were to leave the comfort of His presence to enter into fields ripe for harvest;
They were to be His movement to the lost tribes of Israel;
Matthew 10:5–6 NKJV
5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
And they were to depend completely on God;
Matthew 10:9–10 NKJV
9 Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.
Are you ready for your “Mission”?
Application Point: How is God calling you to sacrificially serve Him?
