INTRO: During the time of Judges, the Israelites were in this back and forth cycle of obeying God, then disobeying Him and receiving the consequences. In Judges 2: 11-15, we read of one of these occasions. In verses 11-13, we read of the action performed, and in verses 14 and 15, we read about the consequences of their actions.
THESIS: When we disobey the Lord, we will receive consequences
TEXT: Judges 2:11-15
11-13 The Action
The Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord by worshiping gods. Vs12 God had done so much for them but they still took it for granted and worshiped things other than Him. They provoked God’s Anger. For us today, we need to make sure we never take God’s love and mercy for granted to avoid the consequences of His disapproval. 14, 15 The Consequences
God became angry at them, rightfully so. The Israelite’s punishment was God delivered them into the hands of their enemies. Also, from then on, God would provide the nation with a series of judges to judge them. While the consequences today are not sudden or in the moment as they were in the Old Testament, they are much more severe. Eternal life is a vital matter to have a hold of in our lives.
CONCLUSION: Judges 2:11-15 is a perfect example of what we should avoid in our lives today. Reading about subjects like this in the Old Testament can serve us well as examples of what to do and what not to do. In the first three verses, we read of what we should avoid and in 14 and 15, we read of the consequences the Israelites received. We need to read these passages and use them to our advantage to stay on the right path. Are we worshiping and giving God the credit He deserves? Or are we disgracing His Love for us by putting things in the way of praising Him?
