Represents the person (Num 1:2)
Descriptive of who they are (1 Sam 25:25)
Conveys authority of the person even when they are absent- such as speaking or acting in someone else’s name (Exod 3:13-14; Deut 18:19; 1 Sam 17:45; 1 Sam 25:9; Matt 28:19; John 5:43; Acts 3:6; Acts 4:7; 1 Cor 5:4; 2 Thess 3:6; James 5:14)
Meaning of the term the Name of God
God’s name reveals his character so that people may take refuge in him for salvation to His glory (Ps 20:1; Isa 25:1; 1 Cor 6:11)
“The “name” Yahweh is the revelation of the glory of God in his acts of creation and redemption and in the revelation of his person.”- Expositors Bible Commentary, Ps-So, P. 107
The name of God is the revelation and authority of the Creator-Redeemer-King
There is a progressive character to the revelation of God
Judges 13:18; Exodus 6:3
The full revelation of God not made known until the incarnation of Christ (John 1:18; Heb 1:1-2; Matt 11:27; Matt 28:18-20; John 14:8-9)

The Greatness of God’s name
Mal 1:11; Ps 113:3 - The goal of creation and redemption is the revelation and world-wide exaltation of the name/glory of God
The Name is sometimes synonymous for God’s praise or fame Jos 9:9
1 Sam 12:22; 2 Sam 7:23 Ps 8:1
Ps 138:2 God has exalted his word (the revelation of himself and his will above all other ways we could know him in creation or providence
The greatness of God’s name as relates to the image of God in us, we were meant to be God’s vice-regents
Yahweh is the name above all names; and his name is revealed in the name of Jesus to whom all power and authority belong (Matt 28:19; Phil 2:9-11; Eph 1:21)
John 12:28; John 17:25-26 Jesus glorified God’s name and in Him we are to glorify it will our lives in view of the mercy we have received Rom 12:1
The effect of God’s name:
it makes His promises reliable (Ps 9:10)
it guarantees Blessing and protection
Blessing: Ps 118:26
Protection: Ps 20:1, 7b; Ps 44:5, 20; Ps 91:14)
It is a solemn guarantee by covenant that He will fulfill all his promises. “For his name sake” is equivalent to the use of “in Jesus’ name” as it applies all the promises and assurances given to the saints.
He guides Ps 31:3
refreshes, restores, and supplies the needs of His people (Ps 23:3)
He forgives our sins (Ps 25:11; Ps 79:9)
Has compassion (Ps 119:132)
Delivers us from adversity (Ps 54:1; Ps 79:9; Ps 106:8; Ps 109:21)
Preserves our lives (Ps 143:11)
It results in worship.
Worship of the name consists in remembrance of all God’s perfections and mighty acts in creation and redemption. (Ps 72:17, 19)
God’s kingdom is established when all nations praise the name of Yahweh (Ps 86:9)
Worship is the proper response of the people of God to the revelation of God in word and deed (Ps 29:2; 30:4; 34:3; 44:8; 48:10; 52:9; 54:6; 61:8; 63:4, 11; 66:2, 4; 68:4; 69:30; 75:1; 86:12; 89:12, 16; 92:1; 96:2, 8; 97:12; 99:3; 100:4; 102:21; 103:1; 105:1, 3; 106:47; 113:1–3; 115:13; 116:17; 135:1, 3, 13; 138:2; 140:13; 145:1–2, 21; 149:3).
Hallowing God’s name: Our Response to God’s Name
“We pray, that God’s name may shine forth gloriously, and that it may be honoured and sanctified by us, in the whole course and tenor of our lives.”Watson, T. (1855). Lectures on the Shorter Catechism
1st, it is preferred before life. We pray for it before we pray for our daily bread
2nd, it is preferred before salvation. Rom 9:1. God’s glory is more than the salvation of all men’s souls.
What is meant by hallowing God’s name?
To hallow is to set something apart from the common use to some sacred end. It is to set God’s name apart from all abuses and use it holily and reverently. To give him high honor and veneration, and render his name sacred.

Q. 114. What reasons are annexed to the third commandment?

A. The reasons annexed to the third commandment, in these words, “The Lord thy God,” and “for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” are, because he is the Lord and our God, therefore his name is not to be profaned or any way abused by us; especially because he will be so far from acquitting and sparing the transgressors of this commandment, as that he will not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment, albeit many such escape the censures and punishments of men. Ex. 20:7; Lev. 19:12; Ezek. 36:21–23; Deut. 28:58–59; Zech. 5:2–4; 1 Sam. 2:12, 17, 22, 24; 1 Sam. 3:13.1
