6 days away

The event that take place from her on out is within a week. Jesus will be crucified in a week
John 12:1–11 NASB95
1 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people? 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. 7 Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 “For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” 9 The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
We have the chance to see several things in this text.

Four Parts

1. The Servant
2. The Worshiper
3. The unbeliever
4. The People

Verse 1-2

John 12:1–2 NASB95
1 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.

The Servant

The Passover was about to start, and people in Jerusalem were looking for Jesus, but Jesus with in Bethany
Things went back to normal
Martha is back serving
things continued as if nothing happened.
Martha remains in service to the Lord.

Verse 3

John 12:3 NASB95
3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

The Worshiper humbled work

Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with a perfume
A consecration of Jesus to royal service
This was an expensive perfume which is made with nard
Nard is an oil extracted from a a root that grows in India
Because they were reclining it was easy for mary to get to Jesus’ feet.
She is showing an act of devotion and love to her Savior. No matter what the cost. or what others thought
The whole place smelled this action.
This fragrance was used in these times are preperation for one’s burial.
When someone died nard was used for the bodies
Mary showed a great deal of love for her Lord. she wanted nothing more then to please Him

Verse 4-6

John 12:4–6 NASB95
4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people? 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.

The Unbeliever

As Mary Worshiped our Lord the moment was interrupted by Judas
Judas knew the cost of the perfume
There is more to this story that is not written in John.
When Judas made this statement they other disciples agreed with him
Mark 14:4 NASB95
4 But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?
It is possible that the unbeliever will attempt to get in the way of ones worship.
even to the point of gaining the trust of others.
Judas made it look like He cared about the poor, but the scripture makes to clear that he cared about the money.
Although this is not mentioned in John we learn that after this exchange Judas leaves to arrange him betraying our Lord.
Mark 14:10 NASB95
10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.

Verse 7-8

John 12:7–8 NASB95
7 Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 “For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
we get to see Mary’s devotion to the Lord
Jesus defends Mary from everyone thoughts and talks of the soon death that He must have.

The Poor

Jesus is not saying here that the poor is not important
When Jesus tells them about the poor
There wi always be poor
and ministry for the poor
But the opportunity to be with the Lord is more important
After this Judas leaves......

Verse 9-11

John 12:9–11 NASB95
9 The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

The People

The people found out ere Jesus was. We know that the Jewish elites wanted Jesus dead.
They wanted to not just see Jesus but Lazarus. He died and was raised.
The Jewish elites wanted to kill Lazarus (kill the proof)
They wanted to kill him and Jesus because of all that He was doing
After the religious folk wanted to kill anyone that got into the way of there religion
