1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

To begin with brothers and sisters as we glint, gleam, and gaze at this glorious text we find an interesting set of biblical facts. Y’all got a minute?

1. First of all this epistle was written to the church at large and is considered a general epistle. John is addressing several things, as he wrote this letter from Ephesus. 1.John wanted to add to their joy, but also warn them that they had to guard themselves against sin. 2. John warned the church to be alert to false teachers and finally 3. John wanted Christian Congregations to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ which assured them of eternal life.

The first part of Chapter 2 starts off with My little children. John is not addressing children, he’s addressing the congregations at large. And the Greek word for the phrase my little children is TEKNION. Teknion represents the original recipients of the epistle of John. Also Teknion or my little children is a term of endearment that comes from the Pastor to his congregation. It shows that John had love for the people he was entrusted to minister to.

John said 2 My dear children, I write this letter to you so you will not sin. John is doing intervention. He teaching the congregation to watch for things that may cause them to sin. Every Pastor has the responsibility to teach the church to stay righteous and pure and holy and godly and sinless. Because the wages of sin is death and the gift of God is eternal life.

John said don’t sin, but if you sin 1 John 2:1 in the (b) clause says “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.First of all let’s establish that we are going to sin, and that we all are going to come short of the glory of God.

And when human nature kicks in and we sin and fall short… Then that’s when we need an Advocate. And an Advocate is our legal representative that presents our case before the judge. Nobody in their right mind enters into a court room without an Advocate, or without a lawyer. Because a good lawyer or a good Advocate will plead your case and try to get you a not guilty verdict. And when the verdict is read typically the judge asks the one on trial to stand besides his/her Advocate.

Jesus Christ is our Advocate, pleading our case before The Father and who is standing besides us all the way. being our intercessor being our Parakletos. Even when we fail!!! Jesus Christ is up in heaven interceding for us even when we don’t follow His will.

The text says in the (c) clause And he is the propitiation for our sins: The term Propitiation in the Greek vernacular is the the Hileos it means a sacrificing substitute for someone

The Propitiatory sacrifice was a great phenomenon Advocated for Humankind. And here’s the history that makes The Propitiation a great thing. In the Old Testament every year on the Day of Atonement the high priest would enter the Most Holy Place, called the Holy of holies. This was the holiest place in the tabernacle or in the temple. The high priest then would sprinkle blood on the Mercy Seat. The Mercy Seat was the gold -covered lid on top of the Ark of the Covenant. And inside of this great ark was were the Hebrew people housed the Lord’s Ten Commandments, the Law of God written on two tablets of stone. But Also in the ark it had a golden pot of manna inside.

When the high priest sprinkled the blood on the Mercy Seat he was making a sacrifice to God. He was offering a propitiation. The high priest was offering an appeasement for the sins of the people in the OT.

The high priest was trying to make peace with God through a blood sacrifice. and Only the High Priest could do this sacrament in OT times. And every year whoever the high priest was at that time, he had to offer an unblemished Lamb before a Perfect God. Our God is completely Holy. So the high priest had to be righteous. And the people out of love and respect for the high priest would tie a rope around his waist just in case the high priest wasn’t quite living up to God’s holy standards. Because if the high priest was filthy or dirty or sinful or rotten or low down the bible says that he’d drop dead. If the high priest would clown before a completely holy God in the OT he would drop dead.

And so mankind was always coming up short, So God in His infinite wisdom provided His own solution to mankind’s problem. He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ to spill His precious blood on an old rugged cross on a hill called Calvary..

Jesus became humankind’s Propitiation humankind’s HILEOS which is a substitute for humanity’s sins…Not every year but a one time for all times sacrifice that reconciled mankind back to God. Jesus took our place and died a vicarious ignominious substitutionary death to save us from our ultimate punishment. Other wise we all would bust hell wide open.

So listen to the tint, timbre, and title of the sermonic pericamy The Propitiation . The text says He did this one time sacrifice or all of mankind and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. Here’s my take on this scripture “If what Jesus did, (DYING ON THE CROSS) was just for the Jews then I would have a problem with believing in Him as my All Sufficient Savior. This was a great phenomenon of an Advocated Propitiation.

Nobody in this world was ever like Jesus and nobody will ever be like Jesus. Ain’t nobody dying for your sins. I mean because out of all of the names of God that we researched in 2021 and 2022, the Name Propitiation is the greatest for humankind. What?????

Jesus being Alpha and Omega is great but you’ll still bust hell wide open without Him being the Propitiation

Jesus being Bread in a starving land and a burden bearer and a heavy load sharer is so true but without Him being the propitiation you’ll still go to hell. Because I heard Jesus saying in John 3:6  I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Jesus my Lilly of the valley my bright morning star, and the rose of Sharon is good but unless Jesus is the propitiation you aren’t making it to heaven.

Jesus being Jehovah Ralph , Jehovah shalom, and Jehovah Jireh is wonderful but unless He’s the Advocate Propitiation you and I won’t make in the pearly gates of heaven.

Jesus has to be the Lamb that was slain before the foundations of the world for the sins of mankind. The Propitiation oh yeah3x or we are not going to heaven.

If Jesus didn’t suffer, bleed, and die on Calvary then there is no remission of sins. The Propitiation.

Then the 1 JOHN 2:3 Text states 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. The essence of the explanation in this exposition of the exegesis of this text, is that talk is cheap. Meaning if you talk the talk, then you have walk the walk.I hear people saying I love Jesus yes I do but Rev. Dr. C.L. Franklin said “If you love something, you’ll support it.”One commentator said I don’t follow God’s commandments because I have to but I follow God’s commandments because I Love God. 1 John 2:3 say This is how we know if you really know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, If you follow His commandments.

There are so many scripture references in the NT alone I couldn’t cover them all today but here’s a few

The first commandment is Love . In John 13:34 Jesus said A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

2. Forgiveness in Luke 17:3 Jesus said Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. 4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

And then 3.Live a Converted Lifestyle because in Mark 5:19 after Jesus heals the demon possess man and the man wanted to stay with Jesus, Jesus said to him 19. Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

In other words make a change right where you are and the whole world will know that you have been born again and that you know Jesus for yourself.

And then as I close in here today one of the most important commandments that Jesus gave was after the resurrection in John 21:15-19 Jesus told Peter if you truly love me then Feed my Lambs, Peter if you honestly care, then take care of My sheep and then finally Jesus closes this scripture with Feed My sheep. And as a Black Pastor in America I have one of the most unique vocations Because the late great W.E.B DuBois once said that the Black Pastor has to be a leader, a politician, an orator, a boss, an intriguer, an idealist, and much much more.

And then Dr. Bernstine of Richmond, California said at the NBC in Jackson, Mississippi that if our black theology doesn’t remain relevant to 2022 standards of living in the Black Community then we’ve lost the consciousness necessary to invoke changes in social justice, education, economic growth, and the civic needs within our communities.

And so I have great respect for the late great W.E.B. DuBois and also great respect for Dr. Bernstine but tah none of those great orations will get us to heaven. Great God, Because it’s only what Jesus did for us on the cross at Calvary. Oh Lord yes

Because One Friday um um They took my Lord and your God um um and Lead Him on up Calvary’s hill and the stretched Him wide and they hung Him high. and Oh He died yes sir for your sins and for mine Jesus became the propitiation yes and then early sunday morning He got Up...... Power.

The scripture is clear about this, you know Jesus by the actions to the instruction Jesus give you. I’m closing here but tah I know Jesus for myself because when I heard Jesus say Come unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and ye shall fine rest unto your souls for my yoke is easy and my burdens are light. Oh Lord I know Him for myself because I heard Jesus saying he who puts his hands to the Gospel plough and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God. Lord I promise I’m going to preach your word. I’m on my study march up the king’s highway because

One Friday Oh Lordy they took my Jesus from judgement hall to judgement they whipped Him beat , Him battered Him, and bruised Him, saying crucify Him 3x. They lead Him on Up Calvary’s Hill and nailed Him to the cross and Jesus suffered bled and died for your sins and for mine. He became the propitiation for the sins of the whole wide world. And He died 3x Didn’t He die Yes.

He went down in the grave and stayed there all night Friday night all day Saturday, stay there all night Saturday night But Early Early Early He got Up! With All Power in His Hands. Yes
