John 14:16-17; Galatians 5:22-23a
John 14:16-17; Galatians 5:22-23a
1) What are all of the main ideas/concepts/points in each of these passages?
Jesus speaking
starts to identify qualities of the Holy Spirit
advocate, helper, Spirit of Truth, ever present (always with us),
advocate - Paraclete, comforter, counselor, court room term
another advocate, Jesus is one, the Holy Spirit is another
unseen by the world, but seen by believers
He is talking about the Holy Spirit (add verse 25)
the result of the renewed mind, evidence, fruit of the renewed mind
John 14:15 obey commands, this is what it looks like in Gal. 5:33
can’t fake these things, can’t tape oranges to an oak tree and call it an orange tree
grow and develop over time, I am being transformed
others benefit from the fruit, not necessarily a benefit for the tree
within the fruit there is life, continues to produce more fruit
general nuance, he will in you in John, and in Gal. because he is in you that is what will come out of you, the more of him being in me the more of him that comes out like
out of the overflow of our heart, spirit will overflow in us with this kind of fruit
not a to do list, but we can focus on a particular fruit
not a sure force of my will, but I can recognize that I might need more of a particular fruit
put our selves in the flow of the Holy Spirit
verse 25 - keep in step with the Holy Spirit
live by the Spirit
John passage, the Spirit lives with you - abides in you, dwells in you
he is not renting space for a time

a) What do we want them to know, and why do we want them to know it?

verse 15 keep my commands, in order to keep his commands I need a renewing of my mind
the Holy Spirit is working through God’s word
