Identify the “IT”
Darren Weissman
“When we don’t have tools to process our emotions in a given moment, that becomes a memory that is not fully formed.”
“You can attempt to outrun the sub-consious mind, just like you attempt to outrun a shadow. You can’t you have to turn around and face it, you have to see the problem as the portal.”
(My personal IT)
Suppressing my traumatic experience…
Joseph was 17 teen…
Hated by His brothers and Rebuked by his father.
Because of his dreams.
“The Day It Happened”
Israel’s last words to Joseph
Genesis 37:12–13 ESV
Now his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”
Isreal:
“Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will sen you to them.”
Joseph
“here I am”
Isreal:
Go now, see if it’s well with your brothers, and with the flock, and bring me word.”
This was the last conversation with his Father for the next thirteen years.
Joseph didn’t know… That three words would change his life!
HERE I AM
Israel sent Joseph from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
Genesis 37:15 ESV
And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?”
And a man....
There are pivotal people that are sent to point us in the direction of our assignment!
The man found him wandering!
What are you seeking?
Genesis 37:16 ESV
“I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.”
Genesis 37:17 ESV
And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
The man.... pointed Joseph in the direction of his destiny!
Genesis 37:18 ESV
They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him.
to conspire (plot) v. — to engage in plotting or enter into a conspiracy, swear together.
His brothers wanted him dead!
The hatred
Rooted from family dysfunction
feelings of jealousy
Think about this…
Have you ever hated someone that much until you wanted them dead?
Have you ever been the person that people wanted dead?
The conspiracy:
Genesis 37:19–20 ESV
They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.”
“Here comes this dreamer” - How can I be hated for something I can’t control!
Genesis 37:22 ESV
And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father.
Genesis 37:23–24 ESV
So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.
Remember Joseph came to…
See if everything was well with them…
See if everything was well with the flock!
But.... He was stripped of his robe!
He was thrown into a pit!
Joseph knew they were being rough with him....
He might have thought they were trying to teach him a lesson.
He knew they didn’t like him!
Genesis 37:25 ESV
Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.
Then.... They sat down to eat!
Jospeh is in a bit and they are eating!
Genesis 37:26 ESV
Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
Genesis 37:27 ESV
Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him.
Genesis 37:28 ESV
Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.
Twenty shekels of silver today = $200
They drew Jospeh up and lifted him out of the pit.....
Sold him to the Ishmaelites
Can you imagine the emotions......
Today wasn’t suppose to go this way!
Remember he is only 17!
(Personal) I’ve been thinking about the days that sent me down a path!
But!!!!! I believe God is in control....
Look at verse 28 & 36
Genesis 37:36 ESV
Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.
Ishmaelites & Midianites
Ishmael was Abraham’s son through Hagar
Ishmael means God listens or God listened!
Midian was the son of Abraham by his concubine Keturah
God will cause you to fall into the right hands to get you to the right place!
Look back over your life! There were some pivotal moments that was pointing you in the right direction!
But often time the pain won’t allow us to see the promise!
