Week Six:Sins of Commission (Transgressions) Transgression is the act of breaking God’s law or doing something God forbids. These sins are also known as “sins of commission.” I would like to remind you of 6 areas where we may find ourselves guilty of sinning against God. They are: · Sexual Immorality - Idolatry · Tithing - Gambling · Witchcraft / Astrology / Mediums · Controversies with God READ Ephesians 5:1-12 Commission – the act of deliberately sinning. Where is it that we are really failing God? 1. Sexual Immorality a. Ephesians 5:5. Where do you fall? b. Are you a Whoremonger? i. Are you a sexually promiscuous? c. Unclean person; guilty of fornications? i. Do you put feet to your thoughts? ii. Where have you allowed your eyes to linger? iii. Where have you taken the temple of God? d. Perhaps you are a covetous person? i. What is it you covet gentlemen? ii. Who is it you covet ladies? e. If you are then you have not inheritance. If these are things you practice then you may not be saved. f. Ephesians 5:12 speaks of the shame of it. g. What is it you are doing in secret? What are you ashamed of? Be sure, God knows. h. Are you a sexually immoral person? Does verse 5 describe you? It describes lost people for they have no inheritance. READ Ephesians 4:21-24. i. Are you living in shame? Stop and pray. Father, reveal our shame to us before it is revealed to the world. We cannot live the victorious Christian life if we are living in shame. 2. Idolatry a. Exodus 20:2-3 i. Money – skipping church to work overtime because we don’t trust GOD to meet our needs. ii. Fame iii. Children iv. Whatever takes you away from God. Consider giving God more of yourself than you give the rest of the world. b. Matthew 7:24 So let me ask you this: if all of our members followed your example, how strong would our church be? c. Reflections: Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” To do otherwise is a sin against GOD!
3. Tithing – Yet ye have robbed me. a. Malachi 3:8-10 Will a man (church) rob God? (Abomination? Surely.) i. The one area where we can test God. b. Where do we stand, as a church, in this regard? Does this church give enough to the work of the Lord? I think not. c. Luke 6:38 – Give and is shall be given… i. Does that not mean that we can grow this church by giving (money) and sending more (people)? d. What is applicable to the church is applicable to the people. i. What would it mean to your family if God opened His window and poured out more blessing than you could receive? e. The question is not, are you sinning against God; the question is, are you robbing God? 4. Gambling (what about ill-gotten gain): a. Proverbs 13:11 by labour… b. Something for nothing, we all like it. Yet the Bible say by labour shall the increase come. c. How about you, are you a gambler? i. Do you play the lottery? ii. Do you play scratch off’s? d. You are either worshiping money or you’re gambling because you don’t trust God to provide for you. You are sinning! e. II Thessalonians 3:10 “…that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” f. Reflections:If you didn’t earn your wealth through godly means then it is not of GOD; if it is not of GOD then do not expect GOD to bless you through it. That would be like stealing food and then asking God to bless it before you ate it. 5. Witchcraft / Astrology / Spiritual Mediums a. Leviticus 19:31 b. Horoscopes. c. Consulting the stars. d. Do you realize that self-help books promote New Age philosophy and humanism? e. You are availing yourself to the devil. Any of the aforementioned sins are grounds for the Pastor and the church to exercise church discipline. That means we have an obligation to God to confront you. 6. Compromise a. Revelation 2:14-15Balaam compromised for profit. b. Compromising that I might make a dollar. c. Do we compromising as a church so as not to offend someone and have them leave? d. Compromising our beliefs for whatever reason. We may be persecuted. 7. Controversies with God a. Points where God call’s it sin; you don’t. b. Romans 14:22-23 c. Is there anything in your life that you are doing and yet you question if it is right or wrong; something you lack a peace about? Something you doubt is right and yet you do it just the same. Are you ignoring God’s still small voice? d. Romans 7:18 e. We are called to live a victorious Christian life. We are not to be in conflict with God over anything, but certainly not sin. The Bible is our guide. We know what is not acceptable in the eyes of GOD and we need not try to reason it away.
