Start:

Entice: We are here today to celebrate the victory of Evelyn Henry in the race of life. We are here to thank God for Her example of endurance and the encouraging spirit with which she lived

Engage: Evelyn was always positive and encouraging. Her difficulties never seemed to define her.

Expand: Paul provides an example and template for such a life. The apostle Paul's life was built upon faith and hard work. At that life's end he provided one of the best biblical images of how we should pass on a living, hopeful legacy to others.

2 Timothy 4:6–8 ESV
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Like Paul, Evelyn experienced a series of difficulties in her race that could have left her feeling defeated, discouraged, and demoralized. It did not happen that way. This serves as a testimony to her faith and a model for ours.

Exhort: It is because Evelyn ran her race with faith that she was content with her circumstances. And it is through her faith that she reinforces and echoes Paul’s words today

Explore: Running with faith gives us the security we need through the changes of life and the final, radical change of death.

Explain: Evelyn joins with Paul to offer these final words of encouragement for all of us.

First, she tells us

1 Earn your rest. 6 (You earn your rest by…)

1.1 Pouring our your life.

1.1.1 Drain the vessel. Don’t hold back. Do not die with roads untraveled, life un-explored, stories un-told, relationships un-explored, necks un-hugged, and grace un-distributed.

1.1.2 You are not rehearsing. This. Is. Your. Life.

We earn our eternal rest by

1.2 Preparing for departure.

Do the good work that God has given you; allow your life to radiate His grace.

Next,

2 Endure your race. 7

2.1 Fight well.

2.2 Finish Strong.

2.3 Keep the Faith.

Finally living well by following Christ allows you to

3 Enter your reward 8

3.1 Our reward is a crown of righteousness which is available only because of the righteousness of Christ.

3.2 This is the shared satisfaction of all God’s faithful Children who have waited for His appearing and spent their lives in this hope.

Shut Down:

At the same moment that we grieve Evelyn’s death we celebrate her life. Evelyn lived her life as a continuing reminder of how we should live ours. Living in faith is our tribute to her and her enduring legacy.
