60th Wedding Anniversary for Calvin and Thelma Faison
60th Wedding Anniversary for Calvin and Thelma Faison
The first two blessings in the Bible are found in Genesis 1:22 and Genesis 1:28. The first is given to animals, because they were created first and the second is given to those who enter into a marriage. God gave these blessings to humans who enter a covenant with each other for two reasons: 1) To produce fruit [that is populate] and 2) to have dominion or to rule in the earth.
You see, the beauty of a wedding pales in comparison to the splendor of two lives spent together in love, commitment, and purpose. This is the case, because God never blessed us just to get married. We are not blessed because we had a wedding ceremony. We are blessed to do something in particular.
God blesses the ones who enter into a covenant that carries out his purpose in this earth, by having dominion over the things that He gives them stewardship over. He blesses them to be managers and faithful reflections of the marriage that exists between Christ and His Church.
Today we are celebrating a union that has stood the test of time. We are celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Faison who have committed their lives to each other and to the purpose of God for the last 60 years! We can celebrate them today, because they have not simply shown us how to love each other, but how to also love God.
Gary Thomas wrote a book called Sacred Marriage. And in this book he argued that God’s goal was not just for you to be more happy, but rather more holy. He wrote,
“The key question is this: Will we approach marriage from a God-centered view or a man-centered view? In a man-centered view, we will maintain our marriage as long as our earthly comforts, desires, and expectations are met. In a God-centered view, we preserve our marriage because it brings glory to God and points a sinful world to a reconciling Creator.”
Thank you for showing us for the last 60 years how to be happy. But more importantly....thank you for showing us how to be holy!
I want to end with this blessing from the Psalm.
14 May the Lord cause you to flourish, both you and your children.
