I. Jesus Has A Better Name vs. 4
I. Jesus Has A Better Name vs. 4
A. Jesus is God incarnate and is named thusly because of what He would do. Jesus means to deliver or rescue. Jesus means to delivered Israel from the wilderness into the Promised Land. Jesus will deliver us from our sin, into the Promise Land called the Christian life. He does so much more than that. Jesus leads us to Heaven and eternal rest. “But when God sent Jesus Christ, God wrapped everything of himself in Jesus Christ and presented him to the world. Everything God is, Jesus is; and everything God had to say to man, he said in Jesus Christ. Jesus is God’s final Word. He is the final authority. He is all God wants us to know.”- Jimmy Draper.
B. When it says that Jesus inherited or earned a better name it is referring to the fact that Jesus limited Himself while on Earth, but picked by His unlimitedness at His resurrection. Heb. 2:9-10
But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
II. Jesus Has A Better Origin vs. 5
II. Jesus Has A Better Origin vs. 5
A. Jesus was not created, the angels were. The writer is saying that The Father never spoke this way to an angel, but He did speak to Jesus this way. Ps. 2:7
“I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
“I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
B. There are those like the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses who twist these verses, in order to make Jesus less than the only begotten Son of God.
C. Jesus created the angels. He was not created. Jesus is above the angels in every way.
III. Jesus Has A Better Future vs. 6-9
III. Jesus Has A Better Future vs. 6-9
A. This is referring to the Second Coming when Jesus judges the world (vs. 6, 8-9).
B. Angels are simply ministers, servants. This is a quote of Ps. 104:4. Not intercessors like the Jews believed. (Mary & Catholics ex).
C. Jesus loves righteousness, and hates lawlessness. He will set everything right at His Second Coming.
D. Jesus at that time will turn our mourning to gladness. Isa. 61:3
To grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
