Therefore

Because Christ suffered we need to have the same mindset
We need to get sin out of our lives
we need to know that the world will hate us
we need to support one another
bear each others burdens
use our gifts to build each other up
The suffering church needs all the support it can get from the family
Peter is going to continue with the suffering theme
read 1 Peter 4 12-19.
Pray

Suffering Is Normal

V 12 Don’t be shocked when it happens
this is what Happens to God’s people
This not a strange occurrence
this is a verse the prosperity gospel would ever teach
Joel Osteen would never expound on this subject
why they cant make any money on it
I goes against everything they preach
If you are suffering there is something wrong with your faith
if you are suffering you are not giving enough money
because a loving God does not want you to suffer
God wants you healthy and prosperous
When the Assyrians were killing, torturing and raping the children of Israel they were doing the will of God
When Nebuch. destroyed Jerusalem and the temple he was doing the will of God
Paul right after he was saved Jesus...
Acts 9:15–16 LEB
But the Lord said to him, “Go, because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
Paul warns Timothy that there will be suffering
2 Timothy 3:11–12 LEB
persecutions, and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra, what sort of persecutions I endured, and the Lord delivered me from all of them. And indeed, all those who want to live in a godly manner in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
Persecution is not necessarily toward religious people but Righteous
1 John 3:12 LEB
not as Cain, who was of the evil one and violently murdered his brother. And for what reason did he violently murder him? Because his deeds were evil and the deeds of his brother were righteous.
the most brutal persecution comes from religious organizations
the Spanish Inquisition - The Roman Catholic Church
Jesus from the Jewish establishment
The early church from Saul
The Baptists in England by the Church of England

Bunyan was imprisoned in 1660 for twelve years. He was imprisoned again in 1675 for six months. Both of those arrests issued from his refusal to quit preaching to gatherings of people when he had been forbidden by law to preach to them

V 12 Fiery ordeal What was happening in Rome
Also a refining process to make something pure
to refine us to get rid of the sin in our lives
V 12 If you are Glorifying God with your actions, words, life. then Satan hates it, be ready for fiery trials

Rejoice

Acts 5:41 LEB
So they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin rejoicing, because they had been considered worthy to be dishonored for the sake of the name.
V 13 we can share in the suffering of Jesus
remember we are not of this world but strangers and pilgrims
Dogs bark at the strangers
Rejoice because you were found worthy
Joseph Tson, a Romanian pastor who stood up to Ceausescu's repressions of Christianity, wrote:
This union with Christ is the most beautiful subject in the Christian life. It means that I am not a lone fighter here: I am an extension of Jesus Christ. When I was beaten in Romania, He suffered in my body. It is not my suffering: I only had the honor to share His sufferings." (undated paper: A Theology of Martyrdom)
We are an extension of the sufferings of Jesus
Rejoice That God is glorified through your trials
V 14 If you are suffering because of Jesus ...
You are BLESSED
Blessed (3107) (makarios [word study]) means fully satisfied no matter the circumstances. This means that in the hour of greatest trial there is a great consolation. In great suffering on earth there is great support from heaven. You may think now that you will not be able to bear it. But if you are Christ's you will be able to bear it, because he will come to you and rest upon you.
Gods Shekinah glory rested on the temple His dwelling place
we are God’s dwelling place
Suffering Christians don't have to wait until heaven to enjoy the glory of God
God’s Sprit rests upon the suffering Christian
but not for
V 15
V 16
V 17 a purging of the Christian, a discipline of the saint
This chastisement is first for His people
so what the church has gone through is receiving this
what will the sinners go through?

Saved Through Difficulty

V 18
Matthew 7:13–14 LEB
“Enter through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it, because narrow is the gate and constricted is the road that leads to life, and there are few who find it!
The Gate is small and difficult
only a few enter/ but mega churches are full
megachurches are easy / many go through those doors
they are seeker friendly/ give what the people want
Not only is the gate small but God has to herd us through the door
we are not saved by our choosing we are saved by grace
Matthew 5:20 LEB
For I say to you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter into the kingdom of heaven.
our righteousness is given to us by God

Saved,-- With Difficulty

Psalm 26:1–2 LEB
Judge me, O Yahweh, because I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted Yahweh and not wavered. Prove me, O Yahweh, and test me. Try my innermost being and my mind.
David is asking for the fire of trial
David wants to be right with God
David wants o go through a purging process
David wants to be refined
Is that something we ask for or run away from?
Fiery trials is God making us more like Jesus
fiery trials imprisonment, beatings, thrown to the wild animals, burned at the stake, tortured, beheading, loss of children, spouse and everything in between
V 18 what will become of the unsaved?
do you love them enough to tell them?
V 19 trust God through your trials
If you are a child of God trials are a fact of life
on the other side you will be blessed
God’s grace and glory will be with you
