Scripture is like a nesting doll.
You can appreciate it on the surface but the deeper you go the more amazing it is!
This morning we are beginning a new series on the Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John.
· They are called sign miracles because they point to a higher purpose.
· They point to Jesus being the Son of God – Come down from heaven to fulfill God’s purpose.
o To die – that we might be Forgiven
o To live – that we might live Forever
§ Say it – FORGIVEN – FOREVER!
The First sign we are going to look at is the Wedding of Cana where Jesus turned water into wine.
· If you think the main purpose of the Story is to be able to say, “Well, Jesus made wine and drank it.”
o You might need some more biblical instruction
· But that is sort of the point.
o There is often more to the story than what we see at first glance
So, for the next few weeks we are going to dig deeper into some of these familiar stories so that we might understand His love for us in a greater way. Be able to tell others about the love of Jesus. In ways they might not be expecting.
· So, the next time you hear
o Well, Jesus made wine
o You can say, true, but there is an even greater meaning behind this SIGN!
At this point Jesus had been baptized – tempted and now in ministry.
· He was going about accomplishing the Father’s purpose
On this day it included going to a wedding!
· I love the fact that Jesus attended a wedding.
Jesus’ life is the most profound statement ever made against joyless spirituality.
Jesus enjoyed life
· Cana was in his home area
· He probably knew the couple
· His mom was some how involved in the proceedings
o She had the inside scoop
§ We are out of wine
· That is like an Italian pastor running out of Pasta at a church dinner
· It just can’t happen
· It is a disgrace that would be hard to recover from.
o If we had run out of rigatoni at the Anniversary dinner you would already had your first pulpit committee meeting with the first agenda item being – A Pastor that Plans Better!
Mary goes to Jesus and says,
Mary goes to Jesus and says,
“They have no more wine”
Jesus says, “my time has not yet come”
Jesus says, “my time has not yet come”
· That is an interesting phrase but so very important
o In the Gospel of John, when Jesus or the narrator uses that word “hour,” it refers very specifically to one thing: the hour of Jesus death (13:1). While sitting at this wedding feast, which in the Old Testament Prophets was often an image used of the restoration and reconciliation of the people of Israel with God, Jesus is thinking about his crucifixion
Mary says, do whatever he tells you.
Mary says, do whatever he tells you.
Jesus said, fill the jars – then take it to the master of the ceremony.
· The master of the ceremony tasted it and an told the bridgegroom
o Most serve the cheap wine first
o You have saved the best for last!!!!
It was through this sign that Jesus revealed His Glory
It was through this sign that Jesus revealed His Glory
· He showed them who He really is!
· The Son of God
· The Disciples believed!
A Deeper Look
A Deeper Look
Jesus has come to meet our greatest need
Jesus has come to meet our greatest need
· Not for wine
· But for Salvation through Forgiveness
o A restoration of our relationship to the Father broken because of Sin
· He came to offer himself – being poured out
The old way of keeping rules and regulations wasn’t going to save anyone.
The old way of keeping rules and regulations wasn’t going to save anyone.
· It only pointed to sin
· It didn’t forgive our sin
When our schedule is full, but our life is empty.
When our schedule is full, but our life is empty.
· Jesus has come
· He is the Wine
· He is the BEST
· There is nothing or no-one who can compare
The story is not that He made wine.
The story is not that He made wine.
It is that He is the Wine!
It is that He is the Wine!
· He is the cause of celebration
· He is the joy of our lives
· Now I know something about weddings!
o I am married
o I have officiated many weddings – that is one perspective
o Now I have given my daughter in marriage
Each is different
· People thought I was going to cry
o I thought I was going to cry
o I didn’t – you know why –
§ I was so overwhelmed with Joy
§ There was nothing to cry about
This is why, when it says, He will wipe away all our tears
It is not that Jesus has an endless supply of tissues
He has an endless supply of Joy!!
NOw What?
· Mary admitted the problem – she didn’t hide it
· Mary admitted the problem – she didn’t hide it
o Admit your need
· Mary went to the only person at the wedding who could help
· Mary went to the only person at the wedding who could help
o Go to the only person who can help – Jesus
· The servants did as they were told
· The servants did as they were told
o Are you willing to surrender to the voice of Jesus?
· The guests enjoyed the blessing
· The guests enjoyed the blessing
The best has come!
