Romans 4:1–25 (KJV 1900)
1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
You know we are not justified by God works
many will say I’m a pretty good person
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Abraham believed God =
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
Reckoned =
If you are trying to pay a debt that is impossible settle - that’s not salvation
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Worketh not = that doesn’t mean that there is not work to do after God saves us and makes us His child.
believeth on him that justifieth
Once you believe
the ungodly, the undeserving
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
A person that has not done one good thing
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
this blessing to the Jews only ?
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Abraham was made righteous before the Law
Religious
We do good because we are a child of God
Why because I’m a pastor
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
Not the father of the religious
the doers of the law
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
Abraham is our spiritual forefather because he set an example of authentic faith.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
He believed this by faith
He added faith to God’s words
This wasn’t because Abraham was a good person
Abraham made mistakes
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
Abraham - 100 yrs old, you are going to have a baby
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
There is hope in God
“according to that which was spoken”
Not according to his feelings
what another human said
what his own experiences led him to believe
Spoken by God
We must add faith to what God has said
No hope
Scripture condemns us
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
God desires that we be steadfast in His promises
Abraham could've said “God, that is impossible”
When we don’t believe God, we lose hope we lose strength
When we think our situation is bigger than what God can do it takes all our energy and we become self consumed
Even though Abraham failed he believed God
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
imputed = counted, reckoned
When we stop looking inward and we look upward, that is when God does the supernatural
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
To believe means we take our personal faith and accept God’s promise
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Come short = a promise but not fulfilled
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
They heard but were not saved
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
There is something that must be mixed with the word for there to be benefit and produce
Coming to church but live the same
Coming to church but there is no change
We need to be in church but there is to be a difference and benefit
Faith is the element that when mixed with the Word brings forth fruit, and change, and benefit
There should be a concern when
1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Lest = forsaken or abandoned
Fear = there should be a serious and sobering thought if when we read and meditate and hear the word but there is no change in our life.
The unsaved that hear the Gospel but don’t accept
Is it because the Gospel is not powerful
30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Not seeking God but they hear the gospel and accept by faith and have righteousness
The Jews pursuing the Law but have not attained
They sought it not by faith
Jesus is the stumblingstone
Salvation by faith is
There
Righteousness is as filthy rags
The gift of salvation is attained when faith is applied to the promise.
1994 my faith was applied to for whosoever shall call
All of God’s promises are attained once faith is applied.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”
All things work together for good to them that love God and are the called according
Romans 5:1–2 (KJV 1900)
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
I know I have peace with God
but that is not the end of what God has for us, He has more for us as we walk by faith
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Saved = delivered
Deliverance in any area of our life is achieved the same as the spiritual deliverance from the penalty of sin.
The same method of adding faith to God’s promises brings deliverance.
Believeth = the entrusting of ones spiritual wellbeing into the hands of the Lord Jesus.
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
God wants us to continue to trust Jesus
My spiritual
physical
mental
emotional
We walk by trusting Him
Anxiety and fear = why do we have trouble trusting Jesus for everything else
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Believing is for our life
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
faith - The assurance of God
hearing = attentively and actively listening
when we go to church - heartily and actively listening to God’s word
Faith - not just reading God’s word
We have to approach God’s word in the right way
I remember heartily accepting the Lord as my Saviour
you could read God’s word all day and it never change you if you
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Mixed with faith
Rest
1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Rest = opposite of fear and turmoil
faith brings rest
Unbelief leads to carnality
carnality leads to fear
fear robs joy
Approaching God’s word attentively in the spirit of
