Designation of Paul
Designation of Paul
Verse 1 tells us that it is Paul the apostle to the Gentiles who wrote this letter. Also chapter 3:1 tells us again that Paul is the human author. This letter was one of the most widely circulated letters of the New Testament and Paul’s authorship has never been doubted. The letter reads as a Pauline epistle. It was written around 60-65 AD.
Paul was born Saul. He was trained as a Pharisee under a man named Gamaliel. Many believe that Saul was going to be Gamaliel’s predecessor in the endeavor to keep Judaism operating as a group that believed that in order to receive God’s blessing on Israel all of the Jews must keep the law.
Saul was present during Stephen’s martyrdom. And soon after recieved authority from the Sanhedrin to go into other nations and bring the Jews that followed “the way” back to Jerusalem for trial and death.

The road to Damascus brought a different path for the zealous man.

Acts 9:8

This is why Paul can assuredly call himself an apostle. The New testament refers to apostles as someone who is emissary for Jesus Christ. Normally it means someone who has been taught directly by Jesus and is invested with the authority to speak on His behalf.

Modern day western Turkey, across the Aegean Sea from Athens. Ephesus was both a capital city and the leading commercial center in the Roman province of Asia. It was the home of a 25 thousand seat amphitheater and was known for its magnificent Temple of Artemis (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world). It was an official headquarters for the imperial cult, which honored Caesar as a god or the son of a god.
Paul came to Ephesus on his second missionary Journey and returned to it on his third.

24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25 whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27 so that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

This is a local assembly of people who have put their faith in Jesus alone to save them. And in following New Testament tradition they would have been immersed in baptism to show their dedication to Jesus.

The adoption in verse 5 indicates that after a person receives Jesus Christ as Savior, they are added to the family of God. But to understand when the adoption is finalized we must look at how Paul taught this important issue.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The word holy does not just mean having superior moral qualities. It is used to identify the need to live a life that is guided by God’s Spirit.
