Opposition in the Last Days
Opening Prayer
Remember the promises and Commandment
2nd letter
No doubt talking about “1 Peter”
BOTH HAVE COMMON PURPOSE!!!
Context - writing letters were not like email or texting.
You had something to say of value.
TWO letters dedicated to common purpose!
I am stirring up your sincere mind
Stirring: arouse or awaken
More than simply making us AWARE
Intended result is ACTION by the recipients.
Brings up a very important point about the purpose of all of scripture.
Did God give us scripture to simply inform us?
NO! It’s purpose is to transform us!!!
Peter gives us even more clarity: Transform us into ACTION!!!
Reminder
(admittedly) this assumes you know the information Peter is referring to...
However, a valuable perspective to have.
(Peter will go on to encourage the readers (them and US) to confront those who oppose the belief that Jesus will return)
He isn’t bringing NEW information
He simply wants us to remember what we already know.
We don’t NEED new information.
We have the truth!
We are constantly learning “new” things
But it all seems to bring us back to some basic truth that God has already told us in scripture.
What should we remember about the truth?
Predictions of the holy prophets
I will make you a nation (He did)
The Messiah will come (He did)
Jesus will come again (He will)
Commandment of our Lord and Savior
Likely talking about the ethical and moral teaching of Jesus.
Love the Lord with all your heart soul mind and strength
Love your neighbor as yourself
Why is remembering these things so important that it caused Peter to address it in both letters?
Be Aware of the opposition and their folly.
Scoffers will come
Scoffers: mockers
Except the fact that people will mock you for you faith.
Scoffers will scoff
I love the simplicity of this perspective!!!
We aren’t surprised when ducks act like ducks.
Their argument
The folly of their argument
Understand the reason for the delay
“Don’t overlook this one fact”
Making an important contrast
(v5) False teachers “deliberately” ignored the truth
Don’t be like the false teachers.
“With the Lord”
Unlike with us
Our view of the world is not like the Lord sees it.
One day is like a thousand years and and thousand years is like a day.
(Ps 90:4)
To God, there is no difference between on day and a thousand years.
Time is a unit of measure used by creation
God created this on the first day of creation.
God exist outside of time.
(transcends time)
God is bound by time and therefore cannot be measured by it.
(therefore … since this is true)
Since the lord is not bound by time
it makes no sense to say He is being slow.
What is actually happening...
He is patiently waiting out of grace
“Not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
There are those who belong to God that haven’t even been born yet.
God is not willing to leave them behind.
