The Ten Commandments
When we look at the Ten Commandments many people think they are out of date and do not apply to them because they are under the New Covenant, they are under grace.
But these commandments are the general foundation for the more specific laws.
There are 613 laws that stem from these 10.
They are also the foundation for what Jesus said were the two greatest commandments.
The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus and Deuteronomy.
We are only going to look at a list that puts them in order.
The Foundation
There are several occasions where the Ten Commandments were summed up in two phrases.
One of these is found in Matthew 22:37-40
Matthew 22:37–40 (ESV)
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
38 This is the great and first commandment.
39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Here we see Jesus summarizing the Ten Commandments into two phrases.
He also shows us why these two verses summarize the Ten Commandments in verse 40.
All the other laws depend on these two without them the rest are unobtainable, you will not be able to keep them, without a relationship with God.
When you break the Ten Commandments down with these two verse this is how it boils down.
The first four commandments focus on obligations towards God.
That is why Loving God with all of our heart soul and mind is the greatest and the first.
It summarizes the first four commandments.
The last six focus on obligations towards others, loving your neighbor.
Our Obligation to the Law
As brother Bobby talked about last week it is a matter of the heart.
If we do not love God with all of our everything then we cannot keep His commands, and we will not be able to love our neighbor as ourselves.
Without Christ in our hearts we cannot follow God’s law.
Our desires are what make our hearts in need of circumcision.
And this comes from God, our salvation comes from God.
With out this our hearts are deceitful.
We are in desperate need of Christ to circumcise our hearts.
Without Him in our lives and hearts we cannot love the Lord as we are commanded to, nor can we love our neighbor.
It all starts with a relationship with God.
