Luke 19:1-10: The Sinner, The Savior, and The Saint.
The Sinner, The Savior, and The Saint, Luke 19:1-10.
1. The Sinner (vv. 2-4)
(Zacchaeus) means pure, innocent.
The righteous one surely wasn’t living up to his name.
a. He was the chief publican (tax collector).
b. He was rich and dishonest.
c. Was small in stature.
d. Because he is a small man, he is unable to see the road for the crowds that have gathered to see Jesus as He passed by.
Zacchaeus thought he was seeking Jesus, but Jesus was seeking him.
Luke 19:10, For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
It is unnatural for a sinner to seek Jesus.
Romans 3:11, There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
2. The Savior
a. Looked up in the tree and saw Zacchaeus (v. 5).
b. Informed him that he planned to visit his home (Revelation 3:20, Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me).
c. Was criticized by the crowd for associating with the sinner.
3. The Saint
a. Determined to give half of his possessions to the poor.
b. Planned to make a fourfold restitution to all he had stolen from.
He followed the law in (Leviticus 6:5), Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.
It showed that Zacchaeus was now controlled by love as before by greed.
c. Became a true son of Abraham.
Zacchaeus trusted Jesus Christ and became a true son of Abraham, v. 9.
A child of Faith (Ephesians 2:8, 9).
Galatians 3:6-7, Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
