intro:
1 John 1:8–9 ESV
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Christians Sin - Christians Sin
True Christians have a habit to Confess and put to death Sin in their life!
Are you a Christian that has a HABIT of confessing your sin to God and repenting?
Are you refusing the look your heart in the mirror..... Are you living an illusion deceiving yourself?
Psalm 51 is penitential Psalm.... or a Psalm of confession of sin to God.
It teaches us the habit of confession, repentance, and joy of our salvation.
David was on his roof one afternoon when he should has been at war
He looked down and saw Bathsheba
He lusted and longed for her
He devised the plan to bring her to the castle and commit adultery
His plan failed and Bathsheba got pregnant
He invites Uriah back from battle and tells him to enjoy his wife while he is back.... for three nights Uriah refuses
David goes into plan B and send Uriah with instructions to the front line
Uriah is killed in battle at the wishes of David the murderer
He moves in and marries the grieving widow and vows to raise the son as an heir to the throne in honor of Uriah
Lier, Murder, Adultery, Lust, Outright disobedience to God as King of Israel....But he was hiding this to himself.... or so he thought
Nathan walks in and calls David’s sin out
There is a Rich man with a lot of sheep - see image on screen
There is a poor man who owns only one lamb… it was precious, truly loved, lived side by side with the kids in the house.... see image on the screen
When a traveler comes..... the rich man takes the only sheep from the poor man instead of his own......
David says that man deserves to DIE...... and then Nathan says you are that man!
David confesses His sin against God
Nathan shares David is forgiven but will face consequences because of this sin....
David deserved death and he received forgiveness.
We all have sinned and deserve DEATH because of that sin..... but in Jesus Christ we receive forgiveness.
In Jesus death on the cross he accomplished the full satisfaction of God’s wrath against sin, and he forgives you of you past, present, and future sins. A Christian is FORGIVEN once for all.
Hebrews 10:14 ESV
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
A Christian has a spiritual habit of Confessing Sin, and putting to death sin presently and in the future.
Colossians 3:3–5 ESV
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
This morning..... Can you say with confidence.... I am a true Christian that has been FORGIVEN.... and that has the spiritual habit of confession?

Confess the sinfulness of our sin

David laid on the floor in grief for a week.... He was wrestling with this truth...... Sin is awful and sin is deadly.
Psalm 51:1–6 ESV
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
He pleads for mercy not Justice.........
He had nothing that show to God that would have brought about any other verdict besides Guilty and DEATH
He pleads for mercy! Mercy! Mercy!
A. Transgressions
Crossing the line.... an all out afront against God and his will
B. Iniquity
the Stain of sin in our hearts - not the coffee stain that comes out
Original sin from Adam and Eve’s first sin...... It is why a little child knows how to sin without being taught....
C. Sin
Missing the mark of God’s standards of righteousness.... The archer no matter how good and no matter the effort and ability..... will always miss the target altogether.... NOT EVEN CLOSE
David takes ownership that His sin is against God!
No excuses - It wasn’t someone elses fault.... It wasn’t God’s fault.... It wasn’t the devil that made him do it..... It was David
Do you take ownership of the sin you commit? That is the first step in confession......
THIS MORNING IS NOT A MORNING FOR YOU TO PLAY THE HOLY SPIRIT.... TO SAY..... YEAH So and So is sinful..... This Psalm is a great example of what needs to happen in our hearts..... It is our sin before God.... not blaming someone else.... not playing the Holy Spirit to convict of sin in someone else...... THIS IS NOT A BLESS HER HEART MOMENT......
Confession begins with an acknowledgement of your sin against God and God alone. True confession is matched with repentance and forgiveness from God and God alone.

Seek God’s Forgiveness

Psalm 51:7–11 ESV
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Clean me and be Washed by the blood - The hyssop was used in Exodus for the doorposts in the passover..... It was used by the priests to sprinkler blood over the lepers in need of purification..... David is pleading for that sacrifice to purify him before God..... purge him…
Wash Me - I need the best detergent! - To remove the deep stain of my sin
Break my Bones like a good shepherd and a wayward sheep
Hear of stone to heart of flesh - Change my heart O God - I need a genesis creation moment here..... There is nothing good and nothing I can do with this on my own.... I need you to recreate a CLEAN Heart in me!
David sees that forgiveness of sins comes from God alone by God’s power alone
When you realize the depth and magnitude of your forgiveness.... you overflow with Joy!

Joy of Salvation

The Bible makes is clear that David lay on the floor for a week and then he got up and went to the Temple to worship..... Maybe he thought through all of this and wrote it down handed it to the choir director and said lets sing about my sin.... why? Because the resulting salvation and forgiveness was overwhelming JOY in God!
Psalm 51:12–19 ESV
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
Evangelist - I am going to tell others your ways and see them turn to you!
We evangelism for so many things in this life..... If we have been changed we promote it to everyone!
Blue Bell
Vacation spots
FB pages for Waxahachie and Midlothian..... Who do you use for_______
Joy in the salvation of Jesus Christ overflows into evangelizing others to know that salvation....
Sing aloud your praise - I am going to be the guy singing my heart out!
Poppi and singing in church! - Be that guy that is so filled with joy!
A habit of confession and heart for true worship
A heart dependent on God! - David was man after God’s own heart..... Humilty in performance
