Roles of an Elder:
“Elders lead the church [1 Tim 5:17; Titus 1:7; 1 Peter 5:1–2], teach and preach the Word [1 Timothy 3:2; 2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:9], protect the church from false teachers [Acts 20:17, 28–31], exhort and admonish the saints in sound doctrine [1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 3:13–17; Titus 1:9], visit the sick and pray [James 5:14; Acts 6:4], and judge doctrinal issues [Acts 15:6].
Qualifications of an Elder:
1 Timothy 3:1-7 (ESV)
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?
He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
Charge:
Brother David, the call of elder is truly a noble task.
While it may involve serving actively or inactive in a local body of Christ, the commitment itself to the calling of elder is a lifelong commitment.
Therefore, do you now, before God and these witnesses, commit to living a life in accordance with this calling?
To keep yourself, with the help of the Holy Spirit, from becoming unqualified for this calling?
To always seek to represent both truth and love, which was displayed for us by Jesus Christ, the head of the church?
