God’s Free Gift
God’s Free Gift
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
Romans 6:15 (ESV)
15a What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?
Romans 6:2 (ESV)
2a By no means!
Romans 6:15 (ESV)
15b By no means!
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If we are going to really understand what Paul is saying here we need to put it in today’s Terms. We don’t really have a grasp of the slave system that was in place when this letter was written so I am going to put it in terms that we can understand.
Paul is talking about a choice between two employers.
He very different job opportunities.
So today we are going to weigh the options. Pros and Cons
1. Look Who’s in Charge
1. Look Who’s in Charge
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23a For the wages of sin is death,
Master #1 offers death, pain, brokenness, desperation...........
The reality here is this master seems easier to follow than the other master.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Master#2 Offers Life and a Promising Future
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Master #1 Comes to Kill, Steal, and Destroy
Master #2 Comes to Bring Life and Life that is abundant.
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
The Master I choose Really determines the outcomes I see in my life.
The understanding that I have had to come too is at times I go back to my old employer and the only way I know where I am at is by carefully inspecting the fruit in my life.
2. Look at the Benefit Package
2. Look at the Benefit Package
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The Wages Sin pays wear us out.
Sin pays the wages we deserve.
God pays in wages of abundance.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
3. Look at the Retirement Plan
3. Look at the Retirement Plan
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Option 1: Physical, Spiritual, Eternal Death
Option 1: Physical, Spiritual, Eternal Death
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23a For the wages of sin is death,
Option 2: Spiritual and Eternal Life
Option 2: Spiritual and Eternal Life
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
If I know Jesus and I have accepted his free Gift than I can trust in the future he promises.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.
Why did he do it!
7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Which life opportunity have you been choosing.
What fruit are you producing.
What steps are you going to choose this week to terminate your previous master.
