Recap:

In verses 5-8 Christ gives us two examples of how not to pray: like the hypocrites to be seen and like the pagan with many words.
Instead He gives us a guideline of how to pray:
“Our Father in heaven:” reminding us of our place and status before our God and Father.
“Hallowed be your name:” again submitting ourselves to a holy and righteous God who’s name will be revered.
“Your kingdom come:” Before our wants and desires we are confronted with the ultimate kingdom, the only one of any value or worth.
“Your will be done:” as believers we need a good reality check at times, that our heavenly Father’s will is so much better then our own. Surrendering to His will is for our good.
“On earth and it is in heaven:” this little statement modifies all three preceding petitions. The worship of God, the sovereign rule by God, and the performance of His will are all a reality of heaven, the prayer here is that these conditions might exist on earth too.
“Give us this day our daily bread:” only after humbly excepting our place before God should we begin in prayer for our needs… But that isn’t suppose to stop you from praying for what you need, God is very much interested in you and I.
“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtor:” what we talked about last week in depth was this understanding that we have been forgiven much, and because of that, we are to forgive others.
An unforgiven spirit cause pain, hurt, and tragedy.
We can curse ourselves by praying this prayer.
Forgiving others is ultimately evidence that God has forgiven our sins.

Sharing what you’ve learned through the homework:

v. 13a) Deliver us from evil

“Lead us not into temptation:”
What does temptation mean?
Temptation, trial, given for the purpose to make one stumble:
Luke 4:13 ESV
13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Though this request may appear to contradict James 1:13
James 1:13 ESV
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
However, God does allow His people to be tested and tried.
So what is being spoken of here?
This petition expresses a healthy distrust of one’s own ability to resist temptations or stand up under trial. It acknowledges complete dependence on the Lord for preservation.
Luke 22:40 ESV
40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Luke 22:46 ESV
46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
2 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,
Revelation 3:10 ESV
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
How are we to live this out then?
Never boasting in our own strength.
Never desiring trials.
Never going into temptation.
Never leading other into temptation.
2 Corinthians 12:9–10 ESV
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
“Deliver us from evil:”
The phrase translated “evil” can mean either “evil” or “the evil one,” namely, Satan. The best protection from sin and temptation is to turn to God and to depend on his direction.
How do we practically depend on God?
