SLIDE 26 “HEROES OF FAITH”
The writer of Hebrews stopped citing names after David and Samuel
Would anyone like to say a few words of either David or Samuel? Anything that fascinates you about their faith?
Samuel and David were great men of faith. Did they have perfect children?
David’s was a result of his son / Samuel’s was not
The transition into the final verses are important also even though names not mentioned, let’s look
SLIDE 27
Hebrews 11:35–36 (NASB95)
35 Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection;
36 and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment.
others here is allos - means others of a different kind
SLIDE 28
others (allos) - different kind or class
Let’s read on about these of a different kind, also to note as we read that God did not see fit to deal with these in the same way He dealt with Moses, Gideon, David etc.
SLIDE 29
Hebrews 11:37 (NASB95)
37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated
SLIDE 30
Hebrews 11:38 (NASB95)
38 (men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.
SLIDE 31
Hebrews 11:39–40 (NASB95)
39 And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised,
40 because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.
Man’s estimate of these heroes of faith is a low one, so men persecuted them, arrested them, tortured them and in some cases killed them.
But God’s estimate is entirely different, He says the world was actually not worthy of these people!
SLIDE 32 “HEROES OF FAITH”
As Paul said in 1st Corinthians 4 thirteen
13 when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.
Faith enables us to turn from approval of the world and seek only the approval of God
We must never conclude that the absence of deliverance means a lack of faith on the part of God’s children
We should give thanks for these saints of old, for they were faithful during difficult times and yet we have received the better blessing” They saw it from afar off but we enjoy the blessings through Jesus Christ
CLOSE / PRAYER
