To begin with in Verses 1-6 James give a warning to the rich. In Verses 7-11 James advises us to Be Patient. In Verse 12 James warns us to Be careful what we say. In Verses 13-18 James say There is Power in Prayer. And in Verses 19-20 James says It’s a wonderful thing to help Save a Soul.

James doesn’t have much love for the rich and famous.In modern times all of the tv shows about the rich and famous and the extreme billionaires etc etc ,,, None of that would have set right with James the Just. It looks like James have a bad taste in his mouth for rich people especially those who abuse other regular folk because of their money, power, and influence.

Let’s read the text James 5:1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

What I’ve found to be really effective ccame from the movie trading places and the essence of the movie concerning rich folk was this “The way you hurt Rich people is by taking their money.” And here in the text The Lord is the One taking away rich folk money. And here’s why.. because of their evil behavior and the text teaches exactly the evils that they committed back in James’ day.

Look at verse 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. The rich folk of James’ day in biblical antiquity would hire regular folk to work their fields, have them do the work, and then they would refuse to pay them.

The bible is teaching us that the very rich live life large. The rich lived large back then and they live larger today.

Most people I know wish that they didn’t have to struggle with money. I’m not rich and I don’t know what it feels like to have money out the wahzoo, but if I did I’d hope that I wouldn’t be a tantalizingly terrible taunting tirrannt. Because rich folk feel like this, like an epicurean idealism meaning rich folk likes to eat drink and be merry without conscious. They aren’t thinking about God. The word says the rich folk of James day took their influence too far!

Finally The Lord is merciful and kind He knows what we’re going through. And He didn’t bring us this far to leave us all alone.

I use to be guilty of this until I learned better. I used to say I swear to God I’m telling you the truth. But, When I read this text with a matured eye and a godly understanding I stop saying I swear to God. When you learn better do better. Amen?

And the B clause of the text in verse 12 teaches, talks, and tells us to say what you mean and mean what you say. Listen to me, I say what I mean so much so until sometimes folk use my name and said Rev Allen said… And I don’t know nothing about it. True story years and years ago about 28 years ago I was in the teacher’s lounge eat my lunch and a group of messy teacher were saying some awful stuff about the administration.. I’m not talking I’m not in their business I’m not with their click or clan I’m just eating my lunch… Next thing I know the principal call me in and said I heard you were in the teacher’s lounge talking about how we run things at this school. And because my reputation of being an honest man that made people believe it and take it to the principal. I said boss, I heard who was talking and I was just eating my lunch.. I said now boss you good with me and if I had something to say I’d come and talk to you face to face eye to eye man to man. He said that’s what thought. He said look Rev stay out of that teacher’s lounge. And from that day on I eat my lunch in my classroom. period. Because people know that I say what I mean, and I mean what I say.... And some evil folk will try to use that honesty against you. I’m a straight shooter what you see is what you get and will tell you the truth in love.

People keep getting sick and I would hear about it in the streets and I would run to go see about them... but some of them didn’t really want me there. I mean as soon as I would hear about members being sick, I’d run to them. So behind my back they were talking about me like a dog. And Sister Starry Taylor got wind of their talk and she came to me mad mad mad one day and said Rev Allen they talking about you like a dog. I’m sure now days that if we follow the formulas that James gives in the word of God, we’ll see miraculous healings. If your Pastor is a good decent man and you have faith in God and in prayer The bible say that the effectual fervent prayer of a man with a clean heart and clean hands will cause God Himself to move on your behalf..

Then the text teaches us that Elijah asked God to stop the rain for three and a half years and God stopped the rain for three and a half years. And that’s when there was a showdown on Mt Carmel. The lastly James 5:19-20 says 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you wanders away from the truth, and someone helps that person come back, 20 remember this: Anyone who brings a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner’s soul from death and will cause many sins to be forgiven. Saving Souls is a top priority for me because the bible say he that save souls is wise.
