Intro

In our introduction to Micah we saw that this book contains three oracles that each have three basic parts, warning, judgement, and hope. We saw that God likely breaks down this message this way to draw the ultimate emphasis to the message, they must hear this, this after all is not the musing of some bumpkin preacher from a hole in the wall town far from Jerusalem, these are the words of God for His people and they would do well to listen to what He has to say through, this, His prophet!
And so today we will take up the first of these oracles, it is my goal to survey this one in its entirety. This means that we will likely not be able to cover every single verse and there is an especially interesting section in 1:10 -16 where Micah utilizes a ton of puns and other interesting word play to outline the destruction that was coming and while we are going to examine some of these we cant go through all of these city names but if you find them interesting I would suggest picking up a commentary and checking it out.
Keep in mind also as we pointed out in our last time together, these oracles really form as, Doug Wilson, terms , a law gospel relationship. We will see God’s law and the tenants of His covenant with these people brought to bear as they are warned of their behavior and told of the terrifying judgement that awaited them and was even now beginning to transpire but we will also see that it is never God intention, even in the midst of the great sin of the people in this world, to simply burn the whole thing to the ground! We have a God of great grace and even in the midst of His great and terrifying judgement He hold out the hope of salvation to those who would trust in Him and walk in His ways.
