Go over the rules
How many rules do we have?
1. Focused Attention
2. Cheerful Obedience
3. Hands and feet to ourselves at all times
4. Kindness at all times
Today we’re going to talk about God and promises.
And I’m willing to bet that some of us don’t know what a promise is.
Does anyone want to tell us what a promise is?
What’s a promise?
A promise is something you tell someone. If you tell someone that you’re going to do something - you’re making them a promise that you’re going to do that thing.
What if I told you that after church I was going to take everyone to get ice cream?
Is that a promise?
YES
You’re right! It’s a promise because I said I would do something.
Now what if I told you that I was going to take everyone to get ice cream, but then I didn’t?
First of all that would be mean of me. But there’s a name for saying you’re going to do something and then not doing it.
Does anyone know?
That’s right! Breaking a promise.
i bet we’ve all broken a promise before, right?
I know that I’ve broken promises before.
people break promises all the time.
Has anyone ever broken a promise that they made to you?
How does that make you feel?
And if someone breaks promises a lot - do you trust that they’re going keep their promises?
That’s right - if I told you every time I saw you that I was going to give you ice cream and then I never did you probably would stop listening to my promises. Because I never follow through on them.
you would stop trusting me because I break my promises
But there is someone who has never broken a promise - do you know who that is?
God! That’s right!
We heard about a promise that he made to Joshua in our video.
Do you guys remember what it was?
God promised Joshua that they would defeat the five kings
8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; not one of them shall stand before you.”
And did God keep his promise?
He had to do some pretty crazy things in order to keep His promise to Joshua.
Do you remember some of the things that God did to help Joshua defeat the five kings?
Hail
Sun stand still
God has never broken a promise - so we know that we can trust him.
God promises in the bible that if we believe in His son Jesus, that He will forgive our sins, and let us live forever with Him and Jesus and all the other people who believe in Jesus.
And we can trust that promise because just like we saw today - God keeps His promises.
He kept His promise to Joshua and He’ll keep all His other promises including the promise of salvation for us.
thank you for paying attention!
