Scripture:
Nehemiah 6:1-3
Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?”
Nehemiah 6:1-3 KJV
“Come down for what”
Introduction:
My brothers and sisters many of us can look at our lives over the past couple of years. Some of us can look back over and see how far the lord has brought us. Through danger scenes Ana unseen dangers.
The old church said we have come this far by faith leaning on the Lord.Trusting in his holy word. He never fail me yet, can’t turn around we come this far by faith.
There is a saying that sometimes it’s good to look back, just don’t go back. My brothers and sister I believe I have someone that can agree with me on the fact that God has brought you from a mighty long way and you refuse to go back to the place where you were.
Truth of the matter is if we were to be honest sometimes it gets difficult juggling the responsibilities of being you.
You make it look easy, being able to go to work, come home be a parent. Take care of yourself, your house and your family.
Wake up and do it all again. It can be stressful at times, It could be difficult at times. However, I believe Im talking to some people that Can say like Nehemiah “I refuse to come down. Some people who can say being me is hard but I refuse to come down.
Come down for what, after all that God has done for me.
Come down for what, after God has brought me through dangerous scenes and unseen dangers.
Come down for what, after the progress and and the change in my life there is nothing my past has for me that my future in God can’t give.
As the song says, I just can’t give up now, I’ve come too far from were I started from.
Nobody told me that the road would be easy. But I don’t believe he brought me this far to leave me.
Just as God has brought you the enemy’s job is take you back to the place were you were. Anytime there is progress on your life in any area you can expect opposition. Because that the enemies job. The Bible says he comes to kill steal and destroy.
He wants you to come down. Man of God he wants you to come down from being the great husband you are the great father you are . Women of God he wants you to come
Down from being the great mother and wife in your family. He wants you to come down.
My brothers and sisters as we get to the selected text we find Nehemiah a governor of Israel who served for approximately 12 years who is now retired and working for the king in court in the court of Susa.
Nehemiah while serving in the court, received word through his brother the state of Jerusalem, how the people were not observing the sabbath, how the walls of the city were destroyed. He received word that Jerusalem was in a horrible state.
So Nehemiah went into prayer and fasting for months, he grieved the city of Jerusalem and the people in it.
The king in whom Nehemiah was serving finally noticed Nehemiah state and asks what was his matter. Nehemiah was released by the king to go and scout out the city.
The Bible declared that Nehemiah went by night to scope out the walls and found the walls of the city torn down as well as the gates of the temple burned down.
He makes up his mind that he will go back to the city and rebuild the city back to its Glory.
Nehemiah returns to the city of Jerusalem to gather the people. The bible declares that The people had a mind to work.
To make a long story short, Nehemiah began to build the wall. He gets toward the end of building the wall and here comes opposition,
Sanballat and Geshum, sends word to Nehemiah, to come down from the wall several times, to meet with them. each time Nehemiah sent message back to his opposition that “I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down.”
I believe this statement is a statement that each one of Us can yell out at the top of our lungs to everything that have been trying to distract us to destroy us, we yell. "IM DOING A GREAT WORK AND I CANNOT COME DOWN”
Just the fact that you are still saved is indeed “a great work.” for the Bible says let every man WORK out his own soul salvation. This let me know that Maintaining your salvation is work. Whether in your job life, family life, or work in the church is truly a great work.
Can I just encourage you this morning to not come down from the work.
Keep building.
Nehemiah along with other devoted builders continued building, until eventually the wall were built back better than before.
I'm talking to the builders this morning, who can't see the finish product. However, you continue to build.
Who don't know if it's all going to work out but continue to build.
My brothers and sisters keep building.
There are a few points we can discuss & learn from Nehemiah's mission from this text.
Firstly
Through Nehemiah’s. Mission we can gather that When you are doing a great work you Can expect opposition-
My brothers and sisters often times when God has called us to do a great work. We want everything to be smooth sailing. We don’t want any bumps along the road. However, by brothers and sisters when there is a call, and anointing on your life it attracts opposition. Well the question may be asked, what are some opposition that I may face. I'm glad you asked. The world can be opposition, temptation of what everyone else is doing can oppose the work you are doing. However the Bible says greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world the flesh can be opposition, the Bible saysin genesis 5:17 that the flesh wars against the spriit and the spirit wars against the foes so that you could not do as you should. We have to place our flesh under subjection, so we can’t come down, the devil himself can be opposition, that’s why 1st Peter 5;8 tells us to be sober because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walkers the earth to see whom he may devour.
Not only that but
2.Through Nehemiah’s mission we can learn that There is always a purpose behind every process-
I’m sure Nehemiah understood this when building the walls. Sure enough Im sure they where tired often, discouraged often, distracted as well. However, he and those around him understood the their current condition was not their final conclusion. They understood that everything they were doing had purpose.
Every brick had purpose, every stone to the wall had purpose and when they finally saw all the prices together in the wall it probably made more sense.
The Bible says that All things work together for the good of them that love the lord.
We don’t understand it now but there is a purpose for every trial, there is a purpose for every tribulation.
We will understand it now. Just know that there was a purpose for everything you went through to make you who you are today.
Lastly we can take from Nehemiah’s mission is that
The Enemy's job is to convince you to come down
The Bible states that Nehemiah’s enemies did not even have the guts to come and tell him to come down, the sent a messenger to ask Nehemiah to come down. Nehemiah respond to the messenger. Go back and tell them, I’m doing something big and I refuse to come down. My brothers and sisters, isn’t that just like some of us. People will try your faith to see if you will come down. You should tell them I’m doing a great work and I refuse to come down.
When you want to lose your temper and curse them out, just remind yourself I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down. When you are tempted to give in to your flesh, remind yourself that I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down.
When you fill like giving up, remind yourself I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down.
As a matter of fact you should look over your life and ask your self Come down for what, God has been too good to us, come down for what. God has brought us from a mighty long way, come down for what. He picked us up turned us around placed our feet on a solid ground, turn down for what.
Closing:
In the grand scheme of the Bible, this picture can be painted as we all can relate to not only Nehemiah, but we can relate to the broken walls as well. We all have been broken before just like these walls. The good news is my brothers and sisters, that we serve a God who like the songs said can fix what is broken.
You have to be broke to be fixed.
When man fell into sin, in a sense the walls of salvation and redemption were broken down,
Example: God gave us a is a good insurance plan in Jesus someone broke into the church and stole, but the good thing about insurance is that when you lose something, It can be replaced with something better.
When you lose something in your life, when something is broken on your life you have an insurance plan in God he can give you something better,
Somebody shout believe it or not better is coming.
We needed someone to rebuild the walls that bridged our relationship with God.
God sent his only begotten son.
Jesus came down to build man up to it’s rightfull place.
He did the work of healing the sick and raising the dead giving sight to blinded eyes and many encouraged him to come down, however he always responded with I must be about my father’s business, in other words “come down for what.”
Even on the cross Jesus understood that He couldn’t come down. They Peirced his side but he couldn’t come down, they put a crown of thorns one His head but he couldn’t come down,He was hung between two thieves, but he couldn’t come down, Why because he understood that he was doing a great work and he couldn’t come down.
Whatever you do, don’t quit, don’t come down
God gave us the blueprint for building. The word of God. Praying jus stay follow the blueprint and keep building
