Passage: Acts 2:42
Main Idea: The Spirit is given to the believer to discern the individual things one is expected to do under the conviction of Christ. However, doctrine is given to the Church to understand the responsibility and truth that is to govern the affairs of the body.
Message Goal: Introduce the church to the truths/ teachings of the Bible that governs our community.

Introduction: Defining Doctrine

The subject we are considering for today’s Bible lesson is based on a variety of things, and our job for the next few sessions will be to make it primarily about the ancient doctrines and how they can be translated into the modern world. This is the only way to make sense of the Bible and preserve its absolute nature. For, so many have tried to formulate doctrines of the church without maintaining the doctrine of the previous church. Our goal, as always, is to discover the doctrines of the first-century church and build the bride or principle for today’s world. The question we shall continue to answer in this series is: What would it be like to believe what they believed in their world in our world today?
Now, if we fail to continually ask and answer this question, we will ultimately exploit the Bible. Effectively, we will only answer the question: What do we want this to say to us today? And unfortunately, this is the terrible path most modern interpreters have taken. To avoid this we must make a distinction between what the Bible says and what our theology says. In a way we are considering the theology of the past rather than the theology of the present.
