After essentially adopting and blessing Joseph's two sons as his own, in the previous chapter, Jacob now assembles and gathers all his sons and issues a final prophetic blessing on the twelve tribes that shows us something of the power of God, the lasting effects and consequences of sin and the superior nature of the grace of God.
